Take out the plate rack and chalk paint a color to match your decor, be sure to use the chalk paint wax and put on silver/ gold knobs.

Since it appears to be in excellent shape , I might think about chalk painting it and using some form of distressing it. Maybe new hardware. It would look like a whole different piece.

Sand it down. Paint it a luxurious gray color. Change the hardware.
  • Definitely chalk paint! I recently posted about a hutch I bought for $40 and chalk painted and spray painted the hardware, it'll look like a totally new hutch!

I have a hutch that I've had for 45 years and I've used it so many ways. Besides the normal dish display, it has been a bookshelf in the office, a buffet with the top removed, baskets were put in the different sections to hold the kids markers, papers, etc., bottom used for a entryway table and a sofa table. I was an Army wife for 22 of those years, so it moved around quite a bit. We didn't always have a dining room. Mine is an Ethan Allen dark distressed pine, so the little nicks just look like they belong there. The plate rack could be removed but could also be used for those skinny cookbooks or children's books. I don't think I would paint it because I really like the character of the wood knots. Maybe get all the oils off and stain it a darker color and then love it all over again for all the different things it can be.

As a decorator, when I get the "What should I do with..........?" question, I always have more questions before answers ;-) What is your style? Do you like the general shape of the hutch? Could it be used in another room to a better use? Does it have family connections or can you get rid of it? There's never "just one" right answer. Sometimes in the case of a hutch, it's not how it looks but how you've styled it that makes all the difference. All that being said, I'd say if it was mine, I may or not paint it depending on how I wanted to coordinate it with other things going on in the room, change up the knobs, then restyle it.

The options are unlimited. Paint it any color you like or that goes with your decor. I think it would be stunning in a soft white (not a blinding white) and the back lined with some very pretty wallpaper. I like and open black on white print. Or you could go for the french look that is always so special. Us the french strip down the inside on one side of the face of this piece and continue it down the drawer and door (blue, red or gray...look up the french look). Or just decal the doors with a french design. There is an abundance of choices. White with a black mattress ticking on the back of the face of this (between the shelves) and blachish/dark gray French accents on doors. TIMELESS! Google French items in stencils! There are many choices

Pull out the plate rack, cut 6" under the bottom shelf, and add a 6" wide horizontal piece of wood. Taper sides to end of added wood, and hang higher up on wall. Put bar sink in middle that sits on top, if hutch is lower than regular size cabinet. Add a creative tile back panel in space below shelves. Pegs on horizontal wood can hold bar tools.

Hi I am an Interior Designer and I agree with Connie more info could help with advice although you have provided a good bit. Since you do not want to paint I would change the knobs to a brushed brass (it is coming back!) anything silver tone would just look like you are rushing to connect to the latest trend. Even though I am sure that your display items are lovely I think some new more current styling would go a long way toward updating as it looks very busy. Since the plate rack is removable maybe give it a break for now. I am thinking earth tones of some sort for the accessories. All this is if you use the top. If you only use the bottom which is my preference change the knobs, hang a nice size picture about the width of two doors and height of a door and drawer. Add a lamp and a antique wood bread bowl with seasonal stuff in it (changing with seasons).

I would paint the back board and door and drawer fronts with black chalkboard paint and change out the knobs. What Cherylbeatrice said is true though, you should probably not display quite as much on the shelves it does look too busy.

While looking at the photo on Pinterest of your hutch, it looked to me to be a great desk and or/ organizer piece. Take out the two doors and/or shelves for a chair to be set and yes, change out the knobs, paint it or strip it and put a stain of your color choice on it and fill it with books, some deco pieces and any office supplies that will make it look like an office piece. Great that you want to repurpose it. Good luck and let us all know what you did with it.
