Need advice on which adhesive to use

I have an idea for a rustic looking floor lamp. I want to purchase a "stick" floor lamp and surround the pole with tall gathered branches. Similar to the second photo but I was thinking of having the branches all the same length (if I can find them) I want to tie rope or twine around the branches on the top and bottom for a decorative look but feel I will probably need to glue the branches to the pole as well. Two questions 1) opinions on how this will look 2) What adhesive would you use to glue the branches to the metal pole as well as to each other. Thanks for your time and advice.

If you intend to tie them, I don't think adhesive is your best bet. Go ahead and paint them first, then with sort of a weave pattern, tie your sticks one at a time around the lamp pole attaching the first one to the second etc. Or you can bundle the sticks around the outside of the lamp pole and then tie them.

Thanks - what would you use to weave them together? I had never thought of weaving to secure them.

Betty has the right idea! Adhesive will not hold the branches unless they are perfectly straight or supported until the adhesive dries. I like the weaving method. You can tighten the weave pattern as needed.

Thanks! I removed the second photo because I think it was confusing. I'm envisioning straight long sticks, not really the branching type. But I do like the weaving idea.

I would try just jute twine because it's more natural looking.

Would it help to dip the twine in varnish prior to binding them to form a better hold when it dries?.

I don't know, I would think it would be messy to work with though.

Unless you can find something that is soft to begin then you shape/mold it into the form you want and then let it dry and stiffen around your pole, I don't think your idea will work. Sticks, branches, etc. are never straight, the same length or how you seem to envision them. Maybe if you could find something soft and pliable like willow tree limbs or kudzu vines and then cut and shape them around your pole then it might work. But, hurry, 1st freeze and the kudzu dies (but only for the winter).

Kudzu doesn't grow this far north. I have some pretty straight tree trunks that are small I intend to use though. I can cut them to be the same length. They are just 'straggley' trees in the woods behind the house.

Alright, sounds like a plan. Please, post pictures when it is done!

https://sugru.com/ Check out this site. It's like a cross between clay and glue, dries to a solid. It may be strong enough to hold the cross poles in place. I do like the idea of wrapping cord around the pole. That would cover the joints.

Honestly, I would use zip ties, they can get very tight, and come in different colours. I often buy black ones at the $ store, since the white ones tend to yellow. Then cover them with rope.I don't think adhesive would hold well, and you can always remove them or adjust them as needed.

Now you see, this is why I'm so glad there is a Hometalk network of smart people! I never would have thought of the zip ties but I think that's the answer. I am planning on doing the rope in the middle near the bottom and near the top. Zipties underneath the rope should hold it perfectly. Thanks so much.

You're welcome. :) I often change my mind, so zipties are great and cheap for me.

Since the 2nd pic was gone, I am not sure of the "look" you are going for! If you want them to go from the floor to the top of the light, you can go to a massive store called Old Time Pottery....they have 2 aisles of various sizes, colors, textures, and other nice straight lengths of bamboo and other branches to use. They also have all different types of natural materials you can use to "weave" the sticks together. I think your best option would be to make 2 wooden squares (I am making the assumption the 2nd pic was square here) out of 1x2 lumber cut to size, I would screw these frames together. Then put the wooden sticks, woven or not, onto the wood square with a glue gun. One about 6 inches from the bottom and the other closer to the top. Then you can slide it over just about ANY floor lamp, easily remove it to change the bulb, or just take it off entirely if you decide you want something different. That way if you do change your mind, your still have the lamp and a new craft form that you can do something else with....like put it around a planter or paint or decorate it into something totally different!

You'll want something to hold the first layer on temporarily, to free your hands, before securing those branches. Once secured, layer #1 should support added weight. If I was doing this project, I would try Floral putty first. It holds any material to any surface... Like dried flowers to glass & is reusable. Then I would tie a cut rubber band around the first layer of branches for flexible strength, and use Wood Glue for the additional layers. If that didn't work, I'd try JB Weld Cold Weld Epoxy, Liquid Nails or plaster of Paris.
