When I had our furnace cleaned the man noticed our chimney was buldging at the bottom ...we do have a older home and he said it needs yo get taken care of before we sell. We need a mason, I know that...My question is will this be real expensive? He said it was ash deposits. Thanks

  • Be very careful Nancy, Anyone who does cleaning should already know what it costs and how to repair them. If not, the concern is are they ripping you off? A chimney is pretty much made of bricks and cement blocks. The only reason why blocks or bricks bulge is because of water issues coming through the wall in the area of the chimney. Not quite sure what you mean when you say it was ash deposits? I assume its the clean out area in the basement that he is speaking of? In any case a qualified chimney sweep should be able to provide the repair services you require or at least point you in the area of one that is qualified to make such repair and provide you with a quote. With any chimney repair the cost depends upon your area and what people are willing to spend. In addition chimney work is expensive simply because of the liability of the people who do the work have. I would suggest first off to get a license number from the guy that did the cleaning for you as well as his insurance certification to assure you that he is legit. I have family located just above the Hartford area and they had issues with their fireplace. And it took several tries to find someone who had the necessary credentials to work on it for them. Hopefully you vetted the person who did your chimney the first time. In any case, without knowing what he or she means by bulging at the base not much information as well we simply cannot provide you with the answer your looking for. Can you perhaps take a few photos of the chimney area in the basement where he or she is talking about or perhaps give us a better description of the issue that your experiencing.
