  • Depends on what type of hydrangea you have. Some bloom on new wood and some on old wood.

I prefer to wait until the following season when the new growth emerges. If you prune at the wrong time chances are you will not get any flowers next season.

Almost any plant should be pruned immediately after blooming to avoid losing the next years blooms.

I think you might find this website of value. There's a lot of excellent information about all types of hydrangeas and which pruning method to apply. http://www.hydrangeashydrangeas.com

Thanks for this! I'd been pruning in early March down to the first big bud. This year is the start of 'no more' !

You need to know what type of hydrangeas you have as some need the old wood on which to form new (or next year's) blooms.. Then go to Google and there will be TONS of info.

It really depends on the type of hydrangea plant you have. Consult the web to identify your plant before pruning. Some like to be trimmed in spring, others in fall. Some like aggressive pruning, others prefer that you simply clip the buds. It also depends on how overgrown your plant may be and the size you would like to maintain.
