You can paint anything....its durability however will vary by what it is. Is this a wood floor?

Replacing vinyl with more vinyl is pretty inexpensive...but then your still stuck with a vinyl floor. My ONLY recommendation for kitchens and baths is Tile...period. Bomb proof durability and waterproof. You can often find entry level tile for less than $1 per sq foot. Considering most baths are pretty small your not looking into a mega pricey upgrade.

I would recomme removing the vinyl first. It's really not that hard, especially if it's old. Then you can either lay new vinyl, tile, or resurface the subfloor and paint. If you decide to paint the floor I would use either a marine paint (made for boats) or exterior latex followed by a few coats of heavy duty waterproof sealant.

Start with the right prep and then research oil cloths and treat it like an empty canvas. Be sure to finish with many coats of poly.
