Japanese Magnolia is what it looks like. Early spring it has flowers after the flowers fall the leaves come. In the winter it is bare.

Magnolia for sure. They flower on bare branches in a similar way to ornamental quince.

They are called Japanese Magnolia in the south. They are not like a regular magnolia in that they are small trees.

definitely a tulip magnolia...one of my faves. A neighbor has a huge one that is really gorgeous in the spring when in full bloom. I keep looking for one but all I find in our local nurseries are the fluffy ones that I call spider magnolias. Does anyone know if one can be started from a cutting? I am to the point of going and asking a perfect stranger if I may have a couple of cutting from their tree!

We sold Tulip Magnolias at our nursery. I never saw one bloom without the leaves. But, there is an exception to most rules:) again, beautiful!

Nancy Thatcher- you may find one at an online grower. Im not sure what the Dept of Ag regulations  are in your state but maybe give it a try. The ones we sold were all grafted, and they were only 4-5 feet and bloomed nicey at that size. Good luck. Alot of nurseries will even do special orders, we did!

Ours puts on buds in the winter then opens up before any leaves appear on any tree including it or flower we have. They are very pretty and my is about 18 foot tall now. Received for a gift one year about 15 years ago.There is one here in my town that is very big and very old I'd say 25 foot tall and 50 years old.

I have two. They are called Japanese Magnolia. Scientific name is Magnolia liliiflora.
