Fireplace mantle

My fireplace has a 1 1/2" brick mantel and is too narrow to use for anything! How do I get a mantel, preferably black, on a non existent budget and no (NO) construction ability. I'm on disability and live on $2000 a month, so I don't have any extra money except for approximately $150 I've saved. Don't know if this is even possible but if anyone has any ideas, would love to hear them!

You could glue board to the top of it. Just don't make it too wide!

Since you don't want to do construction and little funds, I would junt thrift stores, garage sales, and flea markets and look for one very large painting or mirror to prop on the narrow mantle. Don't be in a hurry. The hunt is half the fun. Don't be afraid to get a piece that isn't perfect. Beauty can be found even a piece with flaws. If you like the picture, but don't like the frame, paint the frame. That is inexpensive and easy. One large piece will make so much more of a statement than a lot of small pieces. If you want to make the piece more secure, use hot glue in a few spots to stick it to the brick.

I go with Tanya. Find a board as wide as your fireplace, deeper than the brick mantle. Glue it on top of the brick mantle with construction adhesive. When the glue hardens you can paint it black.

You don't provide a picture of the top of the fireplace or the ceiling. How about asking someone to hang items from the ceiling? That could give a very unique design element. I don't think those 3 items on the mantel do it any favors. The clock is nice but I think it should be hung higher. And maybe find a different location for the 2 paintings. --OR-- Suspend the clock from the ceiling on one side and the 2 paintings, one above the other, on the other half.
