Has anyone tried to get a Pergo wood (laminate) floor darker? Mine is really light and now I would like it darker.Maybe paint? If anyone has tried this, I would love to hear your experience.

Do you have any scrap pieces or a closet where you can experiment? Maybe try translucent satin stain with poly combination. I put that on a ceramic tile counter top and it turn out great.

Thanks @Mary I. I have some scraps and I think I will experiment. Cannot do any harm on scraps!

Judy, that's why I keep scraps from everything I do just for experimenting. My husband who is not a handyman what so ever wonders why I keep scraps of wood, trim, leftover paint etc. lol1 result is available, use up and down arrow keys to navigate.
  • Pergo is a plastic based material It will not darken using stain. What will happen is the tiny gaps between each piece will absorb the stain and darken making each wood section stand out. paint also will not work. While it may look fine when done and if you can succeed at doing this with a paint such as the type one would use on a counter top, (expensive) the floor takes a lot of punishment from walking and furniture and will simply scratch off in short order making the floor look horrible.

Oh, thank you so much! That makes a lot of sense.

I'm the same way mine are light and would love them to be dark!! I also have a problem with them looking like they have a film on them just after washing! Does yours? I'm not sure if the people who lived here before us put something on them or what. If you have any cleaning ideas I'm really interested!

I usually just use plain water, sometimes I will add a little Mr. clean if they are really dirty. I have had that film look but not since using a cotton mop and the water plus Mr. clean. Hope this helps
