I think wooden picture frames above the couches would suit. Depending on your budget, a wooden Venetian blind could tie in with the wooden floors and frames.

match the red in the rug put shears the same color tie them back maybe a silk house plant

Apart from the rug, the room is a blank canvas as the chairs and walls are beige or neutral. What colours do you like? What colours do you have in other rooms in the house? You could pick any colour you like to go in that room but what I think you also need besides colour is texture. Cushions for the sofa/chairs, a throw or two, vases, books, ornaments, pictures on the walls. House plants. You could introduce texture via knitted cushions or knitted ottomon/poufe to put feet up on. Through a textured throw. Maybe a clear glass coffee table so you can see the rug colour / pattern through the table. Clear glass table also looks less intrusive in the room. Woven baskets add texture and can be used as storage or as a planter basket with pot plant in it. Curta

The first thing I would do is create a focal wall. Move the furniture away from the walls. I would have a better sense if you had more pictures of the room from different angles. I would add maybe a fake red brick paneling on the TV wall. Mount your TV , add a electric fireplace bellow it and built in cabinets on either side. I see one window, is that the only one? Again more pictures would help.

Color choices are endless for that room. I would make one wall as a focal point in a different color and then the other walls a lighter version.I have done that in all my rooms and it is very effective. For some color inspiration browse through Behr.com.Remember the colors are not exactly the same but will give you a start.

I would bulk up the wall with the Tv on it. Add tall bookshelves on either side and place some interesting pieces on the shelf. I'd put a really big wall clock, buy or paint on. On the opposite wall with the window, I would put small mirrors, lots of them, all over the wall. Extend your drapery rod to make the window appear larger and hang some funky drapes. By extending it you can have a much larger window and lots more material. I hate to say this but, your rug is too small for your room. The front legs at least should be on the rug. Maybe, flip it around? It is beautiful. If you want to go bold, I'd suggest painting your walls a different colour, maybe a warm toffee. Wall decor doesn't have to be just pictures, change it up with things you love, old signs, architectural mouldings. Old windows, without glass, anything you love. A couple of accent tables and lamps would warm up your space, throw in a big comfy ottoman and a couple if cozy throw blankets.

the furniture needs a change make an. L with couch and love seat you can do shelving on either back wall or where the couch is now...large using the whole wall. You need lamps and end tables. With lamps and with light you can paint the walls any color, pillows and art on wall to coordinate...good luck..
  • Christie Christie on Sep 20, 2016
Move the furniture, right now everything's on the wall create a space I would take the love seat put it so that it divides the room from the other room take the decorative little tablethat you have in the corner and place it beside the lazy boy chair add a nice decorative lamp and some decorations so that you know have a place to read put a curtain from ceiling to floor window beside the lazy boy ,bring in some book cases to put on either side of tv not to high decorate in your style, dark cushions to pick up color from carpet, and if you paint choose a neutral color so that you keep it cozy.Have fun.

I am a decorator of seasons and you have an awesome clean slate. use throw blankets and pillows and vases and flowers for the season you are in....get a small chest to store the seasonal changes. Fall is on us and wow so much out there with pillows and pumpkin vases and throw fall blankets. Go to a fabric store like joanns and buy 2 yds of microfiber blanket material no sew just a great bold color and cut frindges in it.....don't be afraid of BOLD COLOR cause everything is clean color

I agree, spin rug, L shape the couches add big curtains. Place thin sofa table behind love seat if space is an issue maybe push tv to left corner of room. Otherwise raise TV, it looks like there are outlets higher up. Thin picture shelf ledges on the walls can keep room from looking too heavy & are inexpensive, Throws & pillows also inexpensive to add color which I would pick up from a stunning, beautiful tablecloth in the adjoining dining room. A nice quality fake plant adds life. I also have hung tapestry's behind couches because I am challenged hanging picture frames! Three sources of lighting is important. Have Fun!

The TV and Table are very dark and the eye is drawn down a long path.... Also, the tv looks small compared to the distance of the seating. Everything looks so smooth - there are no warm and fuzzy textures or colors to invite a person to cozy up and enjoy themselves. You definitely need some textures and prints with pops of color to soften the room. The pictures need to be larger - - unless you are doing gallery walls. Mix your prints in your textiles - pillows - throws - perhaps a small fabric covere stool. I would consider moving one seating piece to another room. Or switch out the chair for a fabric covered piece. As for color - you may want to accent with a brighter rose - a grayer tone of the burgundy. The walls may look better in a chocolate color....end tables....pretty lamps....lamp shades...floor baskets or vases with greenery. I like the idea someone had of installing book cases or shelving in the tv area. Sorry to be so lengthy, but it really is a blank slate.

After you move the furniture, how about some crisp white slipcovers on the couch and chairs? Then I'd paint the walls a light greige and get a new cool-toned rug.

I have a few suggestions... I would take the pictures you have on the chair and make a collage with them, and I would put them on the left side of the wall from where the tv sits, to me this just feels less cluttered while adding visual interest, just my opinion. Like others said, some throw pillows with the colors of your rug in them would add color. I'm assuming there is only one window in that picture?, if so I think a rectangular mirror would look good above the couch that is across from it. I hope I helped some.

I might be tempted to put a big mirror on your 5' wall inside the front door. Instead of a hall table, a narrow ledge under. You could put candles for visual interest with those little battery tea lights for safety. When they're lit they'll reflect off the mirror and make a nice warm aura. I have the same problem in my hall. Yours sounds like mine. We made one of the bedrooms an office (ours was at the end of the hall, but midway would work too) and for that door we swapped it out with a glass door to let the light open up,the hallway. I have a tendency to put stuff on the floor first to see what kind of pattern looks the best. No rhyme or reason...LOL. Just whatever appeals to me. I mix, small, big, round, square whatever I have on hand. Don't be afraid of making holes, a bit of polyfill and paint, good as new. (I sometimes paint my mirrors to make a nice contrast. The picture of the mirror was once a really pretty grey. When I hung it up, it fell and broke a pice off the back and cracked the front. I didn't want to throw it away so I bought some rope and shells and I made some chalk paint to change the colour. Just have fun with it. If you don't like it, mix it up and try again! Hope it works out for you.

If you want color, Paint the wall behind the TV the maroon color and put the TV on the wall. This will draw your eye up off the floor. Then get throw blanket and pillows in the maroon color on the sofas. I would also use end tables and put flower arrangements or family treasures on display. If you want a coffee table, put a metal glass table. Picture frames should have the colors from the rug. I was told to put color as a triangle. In others word. Display one color on three sides on the room. Pictures should be hung 7 or 8 inches from the back of the sofa. This is so when your guest are sitting they can see the picture.

Paint a soft sage green on some or all walls

You have a lovely burgundy in the rug. That's a very warm color and would pep up the space nicely . Maybe a navy pillow or two with burgundy would give it some depth. Hope this helps.

Add you new wider curtain rod close to the ceiling and make sure the inside edge of the open curtain just co ears the moulding of the window. Add a woven blind at the curtain rod height to finish it off. Use a dark caramel colour with some darker patches in it. If you don't need the privacy, the blind could just be decorative.

Please don't be offended, but your carpet is way too small. It should go under the front of your furniture. Aside from that, try to pick up some of the smaller colours in your carpet and add a couple of throws in these colours. I notice that your sofas/chairs are all recliners which explains there being no coffee table. I would also add some floor or table lamps as the only light source seems to be your ceiling fan. A few plants would be nice. I would settle the actual room before hanging pictures. The room should tell you where to hang the pictures, not the furniture allowing you to hang pictures.
  • Chris Chris on Sep 20, 2016
Get your furniture away from the walls. You'll be amazed how much bigger the room will feel if there is space behind your furniture. An L-shape set up for the couches with the chair in the opposite corner would be better for tv viewing. Mirrors opposite the window is a great idea. Try using 3 of the same framed mirrors like this one from Walmart lined up above the couch. Remove the desk, paint the tv wall dark to make the tv fade into the background and off centre the tv closer to the window wall so you can add a BIG piece of art with your rug and furniture colors. Some floor lamps and a big glass table in the middle of the sitting area....perfect.

Do some diagonal grouping and add some green to at least one wall, add some art work to the walls that pick up the wine and green! Good luck!

I would use black or brown and off set the room with plants and lights.
  • There are already many excellent suggestions. Relax and have fun with it. There is no right or wrong. Everything can be moved around till you are really happy with it.
  • Candice Candice on Sep 20, 2016
Yes, do what Chris says it's a great beginning. It looks like there is too much furniture in that room and to many matching pieces. Maybe an end table with a lamp. You could change the rug for a smaller area rug with some shots of color. Use colorful pillows and throws as accents. Since your palette is neutral presently it should be easy. Take a tip from Mother Nature on color outside as in flowers and leaves or use your favorite happy colors.

a soft dove gray or slate would look great, flip the TV to the window wall and the big sofa opposite. Scootch all the chairs up onto the rug and away from the wall. Balance the chair and loveseat on either side of the couch in a semi circle..? When I tried to move my couches, I just mocked the placement first with newspapers to see what I liked and didn't (or on graph paper to scale) Since I was only having help for final placement it sure saved grunt work! A lamp in the corner, some plants and a dark, plush throw on the couch adds texture and warmth.

I would use the maroon from the rug in some throw pillows. Also, I would get the furniture off the walls.
  • Debi53 Debi53 on Sep 22, 2016
Can I be really honest without being unkind? I think the rug is one of the biggest problems. It doesn't give you any good choices to work with. Other than black and maroon, the rug is basically the same color as your furniture. Honestly, unless you just love maroon, I would get rid of it until you can find a rug that has lots of color and pattern. I know it's hard to do (I've gotten rid of a perfectly good rug that just didn't work.), but your are locked into maroon, black and tan as long as you keep the rug. Before you decorate the whole room, ask yourself, "When I get through and this room maroon, black, and tan--am I going to love it?" If you keep the rug, add lots of greenery--through plants, candles, pillows. Green is found everywhere in nature and the right shade will work in any color scheme. This will add interest. Others have given you great advice about making an L shape. Move the TV to the window wall, if possible, so that your one window is made more important. Hang curtains from the ceiling and wider than the actual window to give it better proportion. I agree with others that there are too many of the same pieces. Is it possible to remove one of the matching pieces and replace it with a wooden or fabric chair? Do move the furniture away from the wall and put slender sofa tables or even a narrow chest behind the sofas and put lamps, chunky candle stands with candles, greenery, baskets, stacks of books, etc. on them. Find an old blanket chest or mission style coffee table with storage. Also use over-sized pillows--not the smaller standard size 'sofa pillows' that have your colors in them, but look for ones that also have some other colors mixed in. For instance, you might find some floral pillows that have a background of black or tan but also have flowers in all different colors--or a geometric pattern that does the same thing. Use solid and patterned pillows. Then you can use those colors in candles, baskets, books, pottery, etc to bring more color into your room. Use throws in these accent colors to drape over one section of your sofas/chair to break up all the beige.
