Need opinions on curtain choices...

April
by April
We've been working on this bedroom renovation for quite some time, and finally stumbled upon a paint color that we like - "Western Sage" by Mythic - and as you can see, it is a creamy pea soup color, which I adore. I've included some pictures below.

As I've mentioned in other posts (pre-2013), we're going with the shabby chic look. We're still trying to fit all of the pieces together. We're now up to the choices of curtains and fabrics, and this is where I really start to feel a little overwhelmed. LOL. :) Especially now, since the curtain we had ordered before was not a shade that complimented the room (though it claims on their site as being "Misty Jade"), so now we're left with having to find other alternatives. There are some I'm considering, but I'm not sure... Some of them are pictured below.

Since I'm not handy with sewing curtains, it would either have to be custom (though we're on a budget!) or pre-made. The colors I'm considering would be sage or green (of course), blue, gold, or cream - so I'm not sure which one to go with. I have a few favorites so far, but nothing that I feel really nails it yet (though I could be just suffering from renovation burn-out.) I'm considering something like a victory or waterfall valance, for a slightly more formal (but not too formal) look, but I wouldn't object to something slightly more whimsical.
So, to make a long story short, it brings me to my question(s) --
Does anyone have any suggestions? Perhaps of places to look at, order or purchase from? As I've exhausted all of the outlets I know of off-hand.

Thanks in advance for checking out (and putting up with!) my long winded question!
Definitely a more whimsical choice, with more accent colors.
One of my choices, which the color is described as "Celadon."
Here's an example of the paint color...
...and another angle.

Amazon.com!! I would go with a bit darker, rich color for the curtains
    • April April on Sep 12, 2013
@Kelly - Yeah, I was wondering about going too light. I guess I need to check deeper into Amazon, as I haven't been able to find anything there yet. Thanks for your input! :)

You could also buy cheap, white sheets and dye or paint them. In our new guest room, I just found an old white shower curtain (fabric of course) and dyed them with tea bags and coffee! Then I glued some edging of ribbon and burlap. I found the post in Pinterest
    • April April on Sep 12, 2013
@Kelly - Wow, sort've lends itself to an antiqued, gold or wheat look then? How cool!
  • Cyndi Moore Tippett Cyndi Moore Tippett on Sep 12, 2013
as I look at the pictures, is the trim pink? and are you going to leave it that color? If the trim is pink, I would change it to a soft white to compliment your wall color, which I love. Then I would go with either choice for curtains as long as it matches or compliments the wall color. Then I would pick up one of the other colors in the curtains to use for the bedspread. Then use pattern and different colors for the pillows, like stripes, poka dots, small flower prints. You can use shower curtains for panels and if you can sew a straight seam you can make a topper using a 2 1/2 to 5" wide curtain rod. I understand about "renovation block".
    • April April on Sep 12, 2013
@Cyndi Moore Tippett - The trim is actually a creamy white, but somehow the picture makes it look a little pinkish. I'll have to correct that. That's a good idea about the shower curtains. Thanks! :)
  • Rita Bankes Rita Bankes on Sep 14, 2013
Have you already decided on a bedspread? If so what color or pattern? If the bedspread is a solid color I think I would go with a print for the curtains, something that matches the walls and bedspread so you can pull accent colors from the colors in the curtains. Everything a solid color could be boring.
    • April April on Sep 14, 2013
@Rita Bankes - Actually we were waiting to do the opposite. To decided the bedspread after we purchase the curtains. But I'm along the same lines as you're thinking, as it has crossed my mind that one could be patterned and one not. That's so true. Thanks for your input! :)

@April a lot depends on the rest of the room, what colours you already have in there. There are a lot of styles in the shabby chic trend. It also depends on your taste in fabrics as well. Mine run fairly neutral and less pattern. You could bring more colour in with other treatments in the room such as cushions, painted items like lamps wooden boxes etc. I did a search on google for shabby chic curtains and found a couple that might interest you; http://frenchcountrycottage.blogspot.ca/2012/05/double-ruffle-drop-cloth-panels.html http://iheartshabbychic.blogspot.ca/2011/08/shabby-chic-drapes-curtains.html Pattern can be achieved in a suttle manner by choosing a fabric with an embossed threadding (much like your second curtain pic), lace overlay or textured fabric with tone on tone or even suttle stripes. Thanks for posting and do update us with a pic of what you do.

@Gail Salminen - Thanks for the encouragement and interest! :) I understand what you mean, it's kind of like that saying "can't see the forest for the trees." Sometimes when trying too hard to look for something, it tends to create a creative block. That's good advice. I have decided on a third color - robin's egg blue. There's such a happy mix when it's paired with green. That's a good point too, as sometimes I get so wrapped up in trying to get everything straightened out I forget that! :)

I have very neutral curtains in my bedrooms. I have changed accent colors in our master twice and not had to buy new curtains. It is like a couch. If you keep the big ticket items neutral, it is easy to change when you feel like it. I have had luck with JCPenneys for curtains. Wide selection. Look online.
    • April April on Sep 14, 2013
@Sue - Good idea, Sue. :) I've checked there, but they do have a good selection - just not exactly what I'm looking for. But, I may check back again. Thanks for your input! :)

It is really easy to make no sew curtains, as long as you do not want something as ruffled as the picture. They have amazing things now like rings with clips on them, so all you need is a curtain rod and a rectangle of fabric. I could help you a little more if you would like. With some pictures of some simple curtains and then you just find fabric, which you hem with iron on hem tape. It is so easy. And it is so much easier finding fabric in the colours you want. You can even put beaded trims on this way. Send me an email at my blog and I will do a post just for you to show you how easy it can be cheriesforgetmenots@gmail.com
    • April April on Sep 14, 2013
@Cherie Little Chalmers - Wow, what a neat idea! For some reason that hasn't popped into my head. I may try that, or at least in attaching beaded trim (which is really tough to find already on pre-made curtains!) Thanks! Will do. :)

The color and style of the top ones are a little old lady-ish. I agree with Sue to go more neutral. Definitely like the second one better.
    • April April on Sep 14, 2013
@Michele Bower - I agree somewhat, in that it's not so much old lady-ish to me as there is just too much pattern the more that I consider it -- due to the pattern being both on the valance and the panels themselves. However, I adore the ruffles and the colors -- so I guess that's what attracted me to them. :) As for neutral, my first choice (which was the pair we ordered that turned out the wrong color, as I've mentioned here), were more neutral. Thanks for your input! :)

I buy my curtains on Overstock.com and have found some real bargains. Or since you are going shabby chic you might think of vintage curtains, you could look on Etsy. Another bargain idea is I have found long tablecloths at Marshalls, TJ Maxx and Homegoods in the past. They make great curtains by clipping rings on or folding them over on one edge and sewing a pocket or using iron on tape. Vintage lace panels would look good.
  • Gloria Duy Gloria Duy on Sep 14, 2013
I just read the above comments. If you buy a bedspread and there are matching sheets you could always get extra sheets and clip rings onto flat sheets. Although the shabby chic look is not so matchy-matchy.
    • April April on Sep 14, 2013
@Gloria Duy - Oh that's a good idea, too! That's true. Perhaps with the layering that has been mentioned? :)
  • April April on Sep 14, 2013
@Gloria Duy - Wow, we're definitely on the same page as that thought crossed my mind too, with vintage and Etsy. We're checking out some flea markets this weekend, and perhaps we might give Goodwill a whirl. That's an interesting idea that you've brought up, too. Thanks for your input! I appreciate the opinions here, as it broadens my horizon on this. :)

Depends on whether you want a more formal or casual look. The florals are a bit more country casual. The others are dressier looking, with the simpler pattern and the sheen of the fabric. Both would look nice. Love the wall color!
    • April April on Sep 14, 2013
@Amy Woods - Yeah, it's a tough one! I like the sheen and waterfall (or victory swag) of something formal, but I like the whimsical look of the floral, too (though sometimes I wonder if it might be too busy?) Thanks for your input! :)
  • Dee Dee on Sep 14, 2013
I love the curtains and valance. I too thought of that set at one time, but I had a terrible time finding bedding that was not tooo busy, or it was just too plain. If you can find shams and pillows to coordinate with, I'd go with the less formal.
    • April April on Sep 16, 2013
@Dee - Thanks! I know what you mean. It seems everything is wildly patterned these days LOL! I'm considering some sort of chenille type bedding or something - as a lot of them seem to be tone on tone. I agree with not going too formal. I don't want to even make myself afraid of touching anything in the room or sitting down! LOL! :)
  • I went for it, April, and included shabby chic, vintage, Victorian, and a hint of French thrown in to complement the gorgeous bed. Will this be the focal point of the space? I like the colors in the Pistachio stripe curtain panel. I believe these colors would accentuate the wall and molding(beautiful) colors. The burlap panel(s) will definitely add the shabby chic/vintage appeal, and the Shari lace balloon shade (linen on left, traditional tan on right) offer pattern and texture. Decorative drapery tiebacks and finials can be used to bring the formal or casual element. I included an image from Pinterest in my example to show an option for combining the looks.

@Darleen L~ Places In The Home - Thank you for your time in making this design board! I so appreciate it! :) You have pretty much hit all of my favorite styles - Shabby Chic, Vintage, Victorian and French - that is so me LOL. :) At the moment I have something similar to the sheer-type shades, except they're just sheers. But they are nearly that color, "antique gold," with tassel at the bottom. I like the curtain choices, especially the top left and the bottom right. And you nailed it with the antique brass - as most of my lighting covers that. I'm thinking on getting a tassel tie back, too. You've definitely have given me more choices to think about. :)

Hi April, I have some "ready-made" linen/burlap panel sources that you could take and simply add a wide band at the top or bottom (your preference) out of a patterned fabric which adds pattern without being overwhelming - or use a contrast color. I used this concept to create a custom shower curtain. - Reasonably priced, too. I'm in Suwanee if you want to look me up. Good luck - sounds like a fun project.
    • April April on Sep 16, 2013
@Sharon's Interior Images - Sounds interesting! I've always like the texture of burlap. That's true. As I've just seen something similar to that while visiting some custom curtains site, and was intrigued by the double design look. Okay great and thank you for your interest and suggestions! :)

On my monitor the paint color in the pics with the headboard appears to be a pinkish tan, with pink trim. However, the "paint spot" sample from the paint company shows up green. Have you thought about what white eyelet curtains would look like? What color is your bed linens? If you used a white matte lisse (white fabric that has white stitching all over it) bed cover, you could use white and colored pillows to draw color throughout the room.
    • April April on Sep 16, 2013
@Jean DeSavage - Hmm, that's odd. I assure you that the trim is a cream color, while the bed is a linen type cream. I think it's because I was trying to get some quick pictures with the iPad. Sometimes they give a warm look to the pictures, misrepresenting the colors. I guess that's a problem with mobile cameras. ;) Eyelet is one of my favorite type materials, though I'd prefer cream over white. I don't have any coordinating bed linens at the moment though. It's pretty much a blank slate. That sounds good, as I think I've seen that before and it would be good to add texture to the room, too. Thanks for your suggestions! :)
  • Yvette Yvette on Sep 14, 2013
I would use the floral panels without the "old lady" valances. Then play on the blue (solid) for comforter and shams. Flowery or shabby print pillows with other colors from your drapes will tie it all together.
    • April April on Sep 16, 2013
@Yvette - Yeah, as I was commenting on one of my pictures; I think one of the things that bothers me the most about the valance is it's two gathered (being that they're trying to fit just one window.) Thankfully, I have two windows together, so any valance that would look as gathered as that would be spread out on mine. That sounds good, as I'm really starting to get even more fond of robin's egg blue, now seeing it with the green. Thanks!

I love that curtain but hang it with the rings and cut up the valance and put on a chair like the one in the picture (ruffles down on the chair) then place the chair away from the window
    • April April on Sep 16, 2013
@Kandy kunze - Ah yes, to give more of a pleated look. Thanks for the suggestions! :)

If you plan to use frilly curtains or drapes, keep your bed linens more tailored, other wise it can become too fussy, and look like it's for a small girl. Or you could have the bed all frilly and keep the draperies more subdued. Of course if you're the only one using the room, go as frilly as you want!
    • April April on Sep 16, 2013
@Jean DeSavage - That's true! I understand what you mean, and I agree. Just a little frill can go a long way, as much as I like a little bit of ruffles. :)
  • Dee Dee on Sep 16, 2013
If you have a Steinmart in your area, they have some very nice quilts for reasonable prices. I just purchased a King size quilt [@No search results.30.] for a Queen bed that makes it look more like a bedspread. They do have matching shams and dust ruffles. Might be worth a try. Make sure you go on line for a store coupon. Home Goods also has some nice bedding. Good luck.
    • April April on Sep 16, 2013
@Dee - Hmm, I'm not sure if there is one near us or not. I think there might be, though! Oh good idea. I always like the ones that don't quite touch the floor, but almost. Sounds great! I will have to consider that, too! Thanks! :)
  • Dee Dee on Sep 16, 2013
Let me know what you decide. You have lots of colors to choose from within those curtains.

@Sparkles - Thanks! I hope so, too. Not much in the way of curtains at our Salvation Army and Goodwill around here, so will have to go some other route. I appreciate all of the suggestions so much. :)

I'm sorry if this has already been mentioned, but I'm on my last dryer load for today and then it's time to get off the computer, but have you thought about using lace table cloths? If you use clip rings there would be no sewing involved.

    • April April on Sep 20, 2013
@Z - I can imagine so. I tend to go for a little more weight so it'll drape better. It sounds like a good deal, too! Yeah, it sure does. I'm still in the decision making process with this, but have narrowed it down to either having a textured valance and plain curtains (or visa versa), or tone on tone - either in sage, or gold. :) So I'm getting closer LOL. I'm so thankful for all of the suggestions, too.

What about something white with a coral/orangeish detail I think that would be so pretty with the paint color and the cane on your (lovely) bed.

I think pale gold with a cream sheer would be an option
