I used a grout removal tool by Dremel and it went really fast. Go to your local hardware store and get one because you will definitely use it over and over again. It was about $25.00. Good luck!

There are grout removal tools available at the Big Box stores. Some are manual, some adapt to Dremels, or blades for oscillating tools.

I agree with Sheila. I have Dremel knock off (some other brand) and I bought the grout removing tool. It took almost no time to remove all the grout in my shower.

I used a single edge blade and it was easy. Just like scraping paint on glass, this will get the job done without marring the surface and it's cheap.

Dremel is the way to go! Fast and easy.

From that picture it looks like the tile is chipped, be careful. There are products out there that will bleach out grout, even good old clorox, but others more specific to grout that work quite nicely. You can even paint the grout and if you seal it will hold up like new. If you choose to remove the old, go with an electric dremel tool, as you can smooth out the tile edges at the same time. You do not want to hand chisel as you will chip out more tile. I personally would bleach it clean, and then if need be paint it.

The porcelain tile appears to have been designed to mimic the appearance of tumbled stone, hence the uneven edge. Honestly, she will never be able to remove all the grout from that type of tile.

I just used latex floor paint and a little brush. Grout is masonary, so very easy to paint. It's been 2 years, and it still looks perfect.

After a thorough cleaning, I painted my kitchen grout with Polyblend Grout Renew, and it came out great.

There is a tool out there to remove it. Just go to Home Depot and ask for a tool for removing grout. It isn't expensive.

My husband purchased that tool from Home Depot. Be prepared for noise and dust! But it is the most efficient way to remove that unsightly grout.

It's called a grout saw and you can buy replacement blades for it because they do wear down pretty fast.

We painted our floor grout with a exterior latex paint. If grout is chipped or crumbly, remove it,replace with enough grout, then paint. Latex paint will wipe off of the tile, hubby is a tile setter by trade, and he says it is so much easier to do this, then removing dull tired grout.

Definately paint. There is grout paint at Lowe's. Every rental we've ever had I sit on a small chair (if on the floor) with a baby toothbrush and a sponge and the results are amazing. Takes years off your home.

I know that there are steam machines to clean the grout, I have one but never used it :(. What I have been using is Scrubbing Bubbles by Johnson. You spray it on the grout, wait few minutes then brush the dirt off with an old toothbrush you want to throw away. the dirt comes off once you brush. if the dirt is old and deep, you may have to do it another time and maybe wait a little longer. I just did the guest bathroom floor to confirm that it works this morning, it came out lovely. Hope it works for you.

You might try CLR. I forgot some CLR on the grout in my shower while talking on the phone and discovered that this stuff eats grout, plus finish on tile........so be careful if using. Anyway, my uncleanable grout is not only clean, it's gone.

I have mold stains on my grout and acrylic seal below it. Can not seem to remove mold on seal. How do I remove mold without taking it down?
  • Trudy Trudy on Sep 22, 2016
I think you have to remove the caulking once mold has started. I've used bleach but the mold always comes back.

Unless the grout is loose or has chunks missing, you can stain it instead of removing it. Many tile stores carry grout stains that also serve as sealers. Polyblend (Customs) makes stains in many colors.

First, Why? If you are unhappy with the color then removing it and replacing it with a more pleasing color is fine. But if your reason is because it is dirty, then the simple answer is to clean it. Get some rubber gloves, a gallon pail of water, a 10th gallon or muratic acid and a scrub brush. Make a mild acid solution by adding the 10th of a gallon of muratic acid to a gallon bucket of water. Don't breathe the fumes and wear rubber gloves, and safety glasses. Then scrub the area with the mild acid solution and wipe it up with water and a rag from a bucket of clean water. Once your done, your grout should look like it did when it was first installed.

To keep your grout looking good, seal it when it is new. Always vacuum your tile floor before you wet mop it. Otherwise you are just pushing dirty water into the grout.

They make a wonderful product for painting grout. I have used it in several bathrooms and it wears like iron..... Check with your tile store and get smallest bottle. Goes a long way.

I think, from the picture, that the question is how to get EXCESS grout off. I have the same issue.
