Any ideas for a small not so private balcony?

When my husband and I moved into our apartment we had a small yet semi private balcony. Although it stretched across to our neighbors side, it was divided by a lattice. I figured no problem, I can hang some planters on the lattice and it would be more private. Well.....now that won't fix the problem. Our landlord had the balcony extended (awesome) and added stairs BUT that also gave our neighbor access to our balcony. The lattice is still there but the neighbors can just walk around it and HELLO they are on my side (which the neighbors daughter clearly demonstrated when she came over while I was checking out the new space and said "I like it, now I can come on to your side") I don't have an issue with my neighbors....they are fairly nice, but I don't like the idea that anyone can come up the stairs or around the lattice and invade MY privacy. I can't attach anything onto the woodwork so I'm at a loss. Any ideas would be grateful. Thanks :)

  • Can you provide a photo or two of how it is laid out? How the stairs interact with each side? Were the stairs added as a fire exit. If so your options may be limited. Landlords simply do not install expensive access stairs to balconies for the fun of it. Someone has required them to do it. So what ever it is that caused him/her to install these stairs may have requirements on what you can or cannot do. But in any case a photo or even a drawing will go a long way for many of us to come up with ideas that may work without spending a lot of money.

I'm with Bob in that a photo is worth a thousand words. Without seeing anything the only idea I can come up with is a tension rod style child gate. That certainly wouldn't keep anyone from getting through, but it might give them the hint that you want your privacy. Or maybe a folding screen placed across the opening.
