I've painted a few of these with Shabby Paints Chalked paint...love them but the roll top is not as fun as you would think :) The first one I did was all particle board and it turned out great, no priming or sanding needed. The roll type doors I did the other day after some sanding for distressing looked so much better so if I didn't get in every little crack it still looked perfect. Color depends on where you are putting it. What does the room look like?

@Lucy in the sky How exciting...keep us posted on how it goes ;)

I would recommend painting the sides, top and maybe some part on the legs black. Then sand and restrain the wood. I've done that with antiques and had great success, especially with the turned legs if you paint just one portion on the legs.

Thank you @Becky quinn I have also thought of sanding the wooden legs and staining them and painting the rest of the desk......this is just one of those projects, what to do !

Spray paint it heirloom white @Lucy in the sky !
  • Hi Lucy! Have a good morning today. We suggest you to use light and airy cottage feel of the antique white roll top desk. See the images below. Hope you like it... :) For more suggestion you can visit us at here http://bit.ly/1eIKAKg

I sanded mine down and restained it. I use my desk as a vanity, great place for makeup and hair supplies,I can get ready in the morning in comfort, close the door and everything is neat and tidy!!

@AnnMarie Goodlad good idea ! I was thinking bout stain too but it isn't all wood so I'm going with painting.

I agree with a lot of the opinions expressed here. I would suggest painting it the color of your choice or doing what you will sometimes see on nightstands - where a part of it is a richer brown type wood as you have here and the rest being a light linen color. :) Whatever you decide to do, please keep us updated! :)

I like AnnMarie's suggestion. It looks like oak. A beautiful strong wood. I definitely would not paint it. Check out what they go for as antiques, but if you paint it, the value is lost.

@Susan Cryor that's what I thought when I found it but it really isn't all wood but is very sturdy
  • Hi Lucy, I sell antiques and am always sensitive to not "over re-doing" a very valuable vintage piece. In your case, you have a darling vintage desk which doesn't have big monetary value and you should feel comfortable refreshing in any many that will fit your lifestyle I sometimes refinish the wood in natural tones, but since the lovely painted furniture is so popular now, I often paint pieces that have seen better days. I use only Annie Sloan Chalk paint or Maison Blanche chalk paint on my furniture due to the quality of the finished product. They require no primining, are sandable in case you prefer a "shabby look" and come in a lovely array of colors. Check our "The Purple Painted Lady" or "Fox Hollow Cottage" for more ideas. Look at Wayfair.com, Etsy for more great designs in painted furniture. Good luck with your lovely piece.

@Debbie Dickman - BeeUniqueVintage thank you for the info I did wonder if it was vintage, I have never used Annie Sloan Chalk paint or Maison Blanche I hear about it a lot, I will keep that in mind.

Everyone is saying white or black and sanding the wood and all that. Normal, I would say sand it down and stain it BUT, I think COLOR!! Think beachy/airy theme...maybe do a base of sea green in crackle paint and then top coat in either sky blue, or ocean blue. You could paint a lighthouse and palm trees on the sides. GOOD LUCK on what ever you decide to do :)

@Karon Nelson Roberts, Top and legs can use for color hunter. I love hunter it should be better color? Regular natural refinishing on roll and top and middle desk. My English is bad.. but I think I could send you in your email I will show my photo of my desk I have so similar. My husband put additional top. It was not finished.

I would just refinish it with a new stain and clear coat or something maybe line the cubbies with a decorative paper
