Home Decor - Western Theme - "Help!"

CORINNE
by CORINNE
I have been helping my neighbor move in to his new home and decorate! He loves a "Western" theme. He hunts and goes fishing. His colors are burgundy, blue, purple, green, dark wood, and brass...any helpful and inexpensive ideas would be very much appreciated! He is on a fixed income. Thanks to all of you creative beauties out there! ;-) ~ Corinne

Look up Rustic Luxe..that is what I love..he might not. Is he wanting all those colors together in one room? Try finding barn wood items, crates, antlers, leather bridles and saddles would go a long way into warming up a space for a guy. Have him be specific..good luck my husband just nods and could care less so at least he has a theme and some colors :) A lodge look would be fun and could be done with a few trips to your local thrift stores and keeping an eye on what people are giving away..even craigslist. Oh and old fishing rods and nets look great on dark or wood walls. Best of luck..sounds fun.

@Shabby Paints His colors are throughout his home. His kitchen is blue and white with wood cabinets and white appliances. He hunts and goes fishing. He has a favorite little wagon with spoked wheels that he has on his counter-divider that looks through to his living-room. Thanks for your great suggestions! ~ Corinne

Not to confuse "western" from "cowboy decor". I have seen many a home designed aka "California" claiming to be western decor. Living in the "west" and in historic cowboy country. You can not go wrong with some natural wood and a bit of leather. Over the top designs include the use of Antlers. http://www.avenairmtncabins.com/PageDetail.php?PageID=389

@kma woodworks, thanks for your suggestions and clarification on decor. His decor is cowboy/wildlife. He does have one set(?) of antlers, maybe I can find something to use them for in his decor?

I have a 1949 house, rec room with pine tongue-in-groove 1/2 way up..its the man cave here. I bought some fabric ,about a yard,,made a few pillows, covered an old footstool with the same fabric (think potty lid cover with elastic around the sides) slipped it on.Those colors sound like a hearty dark colored PLAID..think PEDELETON SHIRT fabric colors, wool or flannel. I'd add a pop of a bright yellow for contrast and to keep it from getting too dark, or washable faux suede in accessories and sofaor chair. IKEA always has modern black wroght iron end table lamps, I added some leather lacing (craft stores) I wrapped around several times for ties to hang down with silver conch medalions. I purchased a poster from Buffalo Bill Gallery (Cody- Wy) and had it framed. Anything old used rusty helps with the look. Worn leather has a wonderful patina. Horse shoes over the entry doors for good luck. Old well used baskets work great for clutter of the newspaper, magazines, remotes, wood or duraflames too. I'm sure he has lots of pictures of his fishing and hunting (the ALL do)... have one blown up for artwork or smaller ones in a grouping. Navy and white GRANITE WARE is fun, new or old. think coffeepot sitting on the mantel with tall feathers coming out of it... I found wonderful ideas from CABELLA and BASS online.. they have home dec sections..maybe have him look there for ideas he likes you could get "that look" on a dime....ask him about any old family treasures, Grandpas old fishing vest, creel, or cowboy hat, dads any photos of him when little playing cowboys? ..Several big black chunky hat hooks by the entry,,I found an old belt/holster at a junk store $8.00, added a cap gun (1950's) hung it on the hook by the door, next to the cowboy hat baseball hunting caps.. This was a fun room to do...20 yrs later its still a fun place to relax. Have fun with this one,,just about anything he loves will fit in.. please post some photos if you can..

Horse Shoes nailed on a piece of painted wood. I saw one that said, Not Lucky....Blessed! Acorns in a glass jar with candle-Check out the Dollar Tree Basket full of Pine Cones How big are the antlers? You could just set them on a coffee table or use on window to hang a swag of fabric across. Use Tree Branches for a Curtain rod, Buy Burlap from Hancock Fabrics, and tie to branch for curtains, (You could make ties out of one of his colors) Picture frames from a yard sale- beat up & painted rustic Take some old pillows and re-cover with some western/hunter fabric. Hope this helps.

@CORINNE Paint Drop Clothes for Curtains- I used them for my sunroom. You could use a Permanent sharpie to write on them. Like A favorite Western Poem, song.....

A few ideas for you; old west calendars can come in handy, use barn wood to make a frame. Attach some barb wire maybe on the wood frames, too. Maybe he has some old b & w prints of his family you could frame and display them on the wall. Spurs hanging on the wall along with a cowboy hat or two and a rifle mounted in the grouping, grab some cow print material and make some placemats. The internet has some great pics of the old cowboys and cowgirls that can be blown up to a poster size and frame using the barn wood, as well. Wagon wheels, old lanterns, old kettles, metal stars, and hammer metal studs in every thing... :) Oh, and some small hand painted signs with the humor of cowboys would be good too. Homemade burlap throw pillows and maybe some of that cow print material made into throw pillows.

Oh the options are limitless! Thrift Stores, Garage Sale! My sister had a log cabin she did in cowboy decor...she had kids cowboy boots that she found on the cheap at thrift stores on shelves, a saddle she actually bought for 1.00 over the loft banister, old horse shoes arranged on the wall, bandannas tied here and there (not lots just a bit of blue and red color), she found cowboy-ish photos in magazines and the such and put them in cheap thrift store frames, she picked up old cowboy themed books and cowboy kids toys just to put here and there on shelves. Antlers are great, but are harder to find on the cheap these days...but the deals are still out there. I just found an online album I have of her cabin: https://picasaweb.google.com/107549729754060245604/CarleneSAwesomeDecoratingSkillsTheCowboyCabin?authuser=0&feat=directlink

I love how she just put rope around the banister "head"...so cheap and clever! And the beaded "Indian" belts on another one! I am sure you can find some old cowboy belts/buckles and do a nice project with them (did you see my belt chair?). She had to sell that place...but kept all the great decor items. My sister was shabby chic way way way way before it had a name too! Thanks for taking me down memory lane! I even posted the album link on my biz fb page for her to see! o)

Make a wreath from a coiled rope. Add a little greenery, some bandanas, a horseshoe or two, and anything else needed to make it western.

If you can hit a tack auction you can get some old useless stuff to use for decoration use only.

if you or he can find or build something that resembles a coat/umbrella hanger... Attach the antlers to the top of it. Attach regular hooks to the rest of the areas around the pole. Keep the antlers faciing the front so its both a coat hanger & a home decor item. Just a thought.
