Refinishing painted cabinet - lead paint?

I have 94 year old (date on the back of the mirror!) medicine cabinet with pealing paint. I hesitate to sand because it could be lead paint. What is the best way to prep it for repainting?

There are lead test kits available at Ace Hardware, Home Depot, Lowes, Menards. You can check for lead in the paint. Once you know whether or not it has lead, you can take it from there.

To be honest I would opt to replace the medicine cabinet.

Wear a mask, use gloves and sand it off with an electric sander. Then use Kilz primer, then paint.

They have various paint removers at Lowes or Home Depot. I would use a paste or gel type. Once applied you can use a scraper to remove the paint. Then you can prep for the finish you want. This way you do not have airborne particles that could be hazardous.

Agree with Sherry! DO NOT SAND! Use Citristrip stripper to remove the paint.

Theresia, if you are sanding definitely wear a mask. But if you use chemical removers there will be no air borne particles and you should ok but if you are concerned still use a mask. You can also follow the instructions at this site to see if you have lead based paint - there are many other sites as well. Hope this helps.
