Removing wallpaper border

by Bonnie R
I went crazy when I was redecorating my house after hurricane Charlie took part of it away. I went with a southwestern theme and put up wallpaper border in every room of my house. Now I want to change and get rid of the the borders. Help! I have tried and am having trouble doing it. It is not easy the way I have tried. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried using that little tiger tool and a steamer Bonnie?

What is the little tiger tool? I borrowed my daughter's hand steamer for clothes and was using it with a scraper which of course, was taking off the paint also. Plus VERY time consuming.

This method isn't fast either and not perfect if the border has a plastic coating, though it does help because it allows the steam some vents to get through the plastic. If your border doesn't have a plastic coating it should work much better as I've experience that way too. http://www.walmart.com/ip/17011348?wmlspartner=wlpa&adid=22222222227009265467&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=18123009910&wl4=&wl5=pla&wl6=39976888030&veh=sem

Thanks @30 results are available, use up and down arrow keys to navigate.Becky. I'll have to go get it. Hope it works. I only have the one layer of wallpaper and its not plastic coated. So hopefully, it'll work fine for me. :-)

@Bonnie, that's good that yours is not plastic coated like the one in our son's room was. I finally gave up after getting all of the plastic off and the first layer of paper with the printing on it and sanded off the rest. It left a somewhat different texture to the wall so I painted a strip around the room. It turned out pretty neat so I was happy.

We sprayed straight white vinegar (some say mix 50/50 with water) on our recent wallpaper removal. Let it sit for about 5 minutes and then scrap off with a putty knife. It worked well on our wallpaper, not sure if would work on a border. Good luck!
  • Did you just try hot water and soak the border? I have successfully removed borders this way and gently sliding a steel putty knife under the border~ just line towels at the bottom of the wall and keep saturating with hot water in a spray bottle. Vinegar works to remove any glue or residue.

Try using half vinegar and half hot water in a spray bottle. Let it soak for about 5 minutes and it should peel off easily. I wallpaper and I have tried this and it works.

@Bonnie R , liquid fabric softener is amazing. We were told to mix it 50/50, and we put it in one of those pest sprayer thingies you can buy. It worked like a charm and we had FOUR different kinds of wallpaper to get rid of. One room. Four wallpapers. all visible. at the same time. *shakes head*
