I think my nursery lied to me...

I think that either my Black Krim or Mr. Stripey plant was mislabeled with the wrong plant tag. Even though I've had my plants for 4 months now, they've only recently begun producing fruit (I mistakenly had them in containers that were WAY too small for the first couple months). One of them has big, beautiful, ridged fruits coming in, but none of them have ripened yet, so I'm not sure what their color is going to be. The other has had a few fruits ripen, but they're pink, and about the same size and shape as an egg. Nothing like Black Krim OR Mr. Stripey. Does anybody recognize this variety? Should I sue my nursery for selling me the wrong plant?! (Just kidding)

I would be really disappointed if I'd waited all season and didn't get a Black Krim. Whatever you do have, I hope it's tasty.

@Douglas Hunt I know! That's the one i wanted most of all. I'll be so sad :(

Mystery tomato is a Roma Tomato used for canning and pasta sauce. Also if at the end of the season you end up with a lot of green tomatoes never fear. Get a paper bag put tomatoes in and close put the bag in a cool dry place. in a week you will have red tomatoes.

I think they were simply mislabeled. Next time get seeds so that you know what you will have growing in your garden. Also make sure your seeds are not GMO.

our tomatoes were so late turning this year, not a red one in site then all at once they were all ripe... everyone I've talked to has had the same problem, sure taste good though, now if the frost will hold off so we can enjoy them a little longer!

@Karen Mortimore I'm in the southwest part of NE, and I've had the same problem this year.

looks too pink for Roma. As for black Krim, wait and see! Pretty sure a nursery would not lie, maybe make mistakes, but not lie. Enjoy whatever you have, they do look lovely and healthy

You have a San Marzano tomato, they are similar to a Roma in flavor and meatiness. Enjoy!

Last year I thought I had purchased a red cherry tomato. To my surprise they turned out to be Black Cherry tomatoes, I think & were better tasting than the red. The squirrels scattered them all over the garden, so I had a nice surprise this spring when 6 volunteer plants showed up, and they have produced better than any of my others. I'm now sold on heirloom tomatoes!

I think customers at the nurseries look at a plant pick that describes the plant and put it in the wrong place when they put it back. I think this happens more often than you realize.

As someone who has worked in a nursery, I can tell you that some customers pull out the plant labeling tags and either don't put them back or put them in the wrong plants. Although I understand the disappointment, I wouldn't blame the nursery as they don't have anything to gain by unhappy customers. They do indeed look like Romas. Better luck next year! :-)

Have any of the big tomatoes started ripening yet? The mystery tomato definitely looks like a Roma.

@Kiely that is the same thing i got when i bought a black krim! i even left the label on the plant for later identification. not happy, i paid way too much for a yellow tomato :/

The large one, I think, is an Heirloom varity. We have been growing some like that this year and they are very yummy!!! The smaller ones look like Romas to me. We also have those. I think the" pink color" must be just in the posting of the pic. HTH!
  • Kiely Kiely on Sep 20, 2013
They're definitely not Romas, but they are similar. They're much too pink, and they're definitely heirlooms. @wannabgardner I'm not familiar with San Marzanos, so that might just be what they are!

They look like a Roma called Amish Paste. Very very good.

Probably not the nursery's fault. Unthinking people pull a tag to look at it and stick it back in the wrong pot sometimes. The paste shaped tomato is obviously not either one of those. I can only guess but the large tomato looks bigger than Black Krim usually are. Time will tell! :-)

Btw, Roma is a particular variety. There are many paste tomatoes besides Roma.

we usually pull up the vine and hang it upside down in the garage and this works great too, although it can be a bit messy... sometimes you get caught and have to get them out of the garden fast...

I had some that were ridgey like the larger variety you have there, they were pink, called brandy wine...

This could be the "Stripy". The color won't show until it is closer to getting ripe. Regardless it looks to be in the heirloom tomato family and it does take them longer to ripen. I am sure you will enjoy.

you want to sue a nursery for labeling wrong??? isn't that a bit extreme... probably a worker made the mistake... let your tomatoes ripen and enjoy them and don't take up the courts time with such frivial crap...
