Smooth faced kitchen cabinet doors

Most paint or stain technics show cabinets with insets or nice borders etc that will grab the antique effect of your painting. Mine are smooth. No character at all. Think IKEA... what can you paint these type doors with and update them with?

I would add some trim to the doors to give them more character. The photo shows some simple trim work that can easily be added, painted and new hardware!

I used anigliptis which a white wallpaper with raised elements. Mine was a bead board pattern. I cut a rectangle, centering it and then painted the same as door. Easy facelift.

Stencils, molding or trim would work.

If they are solid wood, or even a good board, you can use a router and cut in a groove. Different bits can give you lots of variations.

You might also look at metal wall hangings. They'd not only give the raised design, they'd be stunning. And there is a lot of fretwork at home improvement stores made out of wood that would also work.

You can make an insert just by framing them out. If you don't want to add depth with wood, and if you like designs vs just paint, try taping the design(s) to your liking, paint the color you want and remove tape. This gives an illusion of depth + your own little touch of character.

I had plain front cabinet doors like you do. I sanded them I primed them with the kilts primer. I then cut 1/4" thick ply about 2 1/4 inch wide into strips . I've then glued them along the edges of the the cabinet doors. It change the plain front cabinet doors into shaker type of cabinets . I finished painting them with a semi gloss oil base paint. Caution when you paint with this oil base paint make sure that you're in a well ventilated area . Family members were impressed on how it made a difference. Good luck and I hope this helps

Redo with mod podge. Collect pics you like. Could be spices like you see on seed packs-enlarged. Center on door and cover in mod podge. Cut strips of wood to look like picture frame and glue to the doors. Change handles to something of similar color to the frames. Mom got tired of her kitchen one year and put up cornucopia decals on cabinet doors and freezer door of fridge.

I saw a post recently where someone took lattice strips and glued them around the edges. Cabinets looked just like Shaker style cabinets when finished.

Depends on your taste. Maybe darker by a shade so they're "almost there" or even a contrasting color or just the color they come in. Designers choice! 😀

I would affix them with E 6000 glue. Or you might think of something that wouldn't be so permanent. You don't want them banging every time you open the cabinet.

Before you do anything check to see if they are ikea or not. I wanted those doors for my home a few months ago so when we were there those were the most expensive doors because of this wrapping they do to make it smooth and white. White is also very expensive. So you may want to take your door in have it checked and ask them how to paint or add interest do to the special finish.

My daughter had those doors so she got her wood yard to cut strips of midfield for her she glued them on so they look like shaker doors then painted the whole lot with Valpar grey paint and then lacquered them in a Matt lacquer. Changed the handles and her kitchen looks amazing.

use Peel & stick contact paper. Cut out 2" strips and put boarder around them. Or you can use decorative duct tape. Contact paper will not harm finish when removed.

I think they look great as is.

I agree with Rosemary Kelly.... they are lovely as they are. Why would you want to change them? Everyone wants a lovely white, clean kitchen and you have one. If you want to add colour you can paint them or add new knobs but I would leave them just as they are. White never goes out of fashion.

milk paint to give them some depth

If you really do want a change, you could find some cheap Dollar Tree picture frames and glue to the doors in a design. Add some textured wallpaper to the inside of the frames and paint. Or if you or your spouse are talented get some straight wood molding and add to the edges for shaker style cabinets and paint. Good luck.

My all white smooth cabinets have black antique hardware on them, and it gives them a lot of character.
    • Mary Mary on Oct 04, 2016
By the way, I live in a 1920's Mill home, so the antique hardware goes with the kitchen décor really well.
