Anyone know their wasps?

Is this a nest of paper wasps? This thing is about a foot in diameter at the top and about 18-20 tall overall. It's a thing of beauty.
Our local do it yourself pest control guy said the bees will die off in the winter. If this is true, I'd like to get the nest and put it with my collection of bird's nests I have found around my yard.

I've never been able to keep these around. I always have the image of "The Shining" when I see them. I would get rid of it.
  • I would not bring it in the house. We had one years ago on our farm and one of the old farmers told us that they go dormant and someone he knew took it in the house where they awoke and swarmed. do not know if that is a true story, but many insects do hibernate. Whatever you do, wait until a freeze sets in and remove it at dark. They go in at night.

Renee I have no intention of bring it in. I'd like to cut it down and place it in my backyard with the rst of my nature's art collection.

@Tom, I don't think that's a wasps nest. Looks more like a hornet's nest. You might be able to have it in your collection, just be careful.

These are bald faced hornets. A hive with a queen. Wait until first hard frost, queen burrows into the ground and all others die in the cold. collect nest....if you slice it in half top to bottom you will be amazed at their architecture.

put on a Bee keepers suit, then get an extension pole and tie a rag to the end and set it on fire, then run. Because they are very painful and if you are allergic, they can KILL you.

However if you insist on having one, then make one yourself out of paper mâchè`. Flour news paper and glue, oh and a nice limb.

have a professional deal with it, Tell them you want the nest, but I would have it removed before there is a swarming episode. My dad was in pest control, he would not have let that sit. They will attack anything.

Hornets are not like bees. When a bee stings you, they leave their stinger behind and die. Hornets however will keep on coming back again and again to sting. I know it's not an orthodox way of killing hornets or wasps, but I had one growing in a fairly dense vine (the next door neighbours). I nearly put my hands on it when trimming the vine. My husband sprayed the nest (not as large as the one you have) with an insect spray, and then as they came out of the next sprayed them with an aerosol containing GLUE! It worked. However professional help would be my recommendation.
