They are 5 feet tall, black, with 4 shelves each. My daughter hates them, but I would like to use them for something besides bookcases.

I used 2 bookcases as a room divider between my dining room and den. On the den side they are bookcases and on the DR side they have matching wall art. I also painted them colors to match the room on each side. Everyone loves the idea.

Do you or your daughter have any collections? I have collected milk glass for years and was on the verge of getting rid of lots of it because I had no place to display it. Inspiration struck ... I also had an old plywood bookcase that my sweet hubby drug home. I HATED it! I lined the back of the bookcase with some beautiful wallpaper (gift wrap would also work)...Now all my beautiful white glass is in one place and looks "marvelous darling". I LOVE that bookcase now.

If her room is large enough, you could paint and use back to back as a partial room divider or if the back is cardboard put them next to each other as open shelving room divider.

LET your daughter pick out some scrapbook paper to her liking & glue it all over them. Let her do the gluing with your help only & let her design them the way she likes with the paper she picked out. This will give her a connection to them & turn them into something she WILL like & maybe even treasure in the future. She can put HER special things & what-nots on them to turn them into HER treasured bookcases. GOOD LUCK! Hope this helps. :)

A combination of metallic paint and a coordinating wallpaper can make these plain bookcases "pop"! Take shelves out, paper the back walls of the units, then paint the rest with a metallic paint ( I recently used Martha Stewart's "Sterling"). Remember to ensure adhesion by first applying a coat of "Gripper".

Turn them on their SIDES, put foam slabs on top, cover the foam and you have nice benches suitable for a mud room or foyer or "window seat" in another room. However, if they were mine, I'd add a false bottom to each to raise them up to a better height, add crown molding at the top (bolt them together first) and paint them in my desired color. Add molding at the vertical join - between the two units - as well to make them look like a single unit.

Put them on each side of her bed, flat against the wall. Put a tension curtain rod or tension shower curtain rod between the bookcases and hang curtains. You can tie them back to make a kind of princess look and hang a picture or mirror in the space. Or leave the curtains hanging down. You can put fairy lights behind the curtains for a fun glow at night.

Similar to Itsus' idea, I once used 2 bookcases to flank a bed & made a faux Murphy bed setup for guests. A curtain rod made bed frame & mattresses disappear when not in use. OR. . . Paint a pretty color (or white) & mount one or two of the shelves between them for a nice desk setup. They can be installed directly or on "L" brackets.

Turn them on their side and stack. Put hooks in each section. In mud room they make a place for children to hang coats and place backpacks. Paint white. Be sure to attach to each and to walls.

The book case is amazing. This prompted to design the same concept, same dimensions and number of shelves for my daughter. I hope she will love it This was after to and fro with my colleagues at workplace. I am sure by next week I should have the bookcase ready for Cutting with CNC. I will update on the progress.
