- Update your lamps and/or shades. You may choose to buy new, or dress up your old plain shade using fabric pens, ribbon, beading, fabric, hanging crystals... endless possibilities! And, while you're at it, spray paint the base to bring an outdated lamp in to the 21st century.
- Feel adventurous? Install crown molding, baseboard and doorway trim. One trick to add depth is to install a strip of quarter round six inches or so above your existing baseboard and paint the baseboard, wall in between, and quarter round gloss white - beautiful upgrade!
- Repaint the walls and/or ceiling. A simple, inexpensive way to transform any room. Think about painting the ceiling a bold color, and the walls a neutral hue - stunning way to add a dramatic accent!
- Hang your photos artistically (and NOT too high!). Group them with mirrors or art, make a clock using the photos as the numbers, vary the photo sizes... A great idea is to play around with them prior to hanging by laying out paper in the size of the wall space you want to fill, then arrange the frames - when you have them laid out how you want them, make holes in the paper where the nails will go, place the paper on the wall and mark through the holes...and - voila - wall art!
- Slip cover an outdated floral couch, add new throw pillows - or cheaper still... cover your old ones with scrap fabric from the fabric store! A great way to introduce a new color, or add a splash.
- Rearranging your furniture and reorganizing the flow can make a huge difference. Play around with it until you find a layout you love.
- Whether you have built in or free standing book cases, highlight them by painting or wallpapering the inside back to coordinate with the room, carry through an accent color, or add splash of something bright. If you want the ability to change out depending on your mood, cover cardboard cut to the dimensions of the back of the shelf in fabric - simply slide in, and presto, you have a new look!
- Hang curtains, swag sheers over a rod, or make a simple valance to accent windows.
