Making new wood into weathered looking wood

I really love the look of weathered wood. Does anyone know of a way to speed up the process?

I have seen the results of this, but haven't done it myself: 1 part water 1 part drain cleaner (liquid plumber, drano, etc.) Apply with a squirt bottle. This will gray the wood, but use caution (gloves, eye protection).
