If it is really small - consider just putting in a shower instead of a tub/shower combination. You can buy inexpensive shower kit enclosures and put it in.

Recently, I heard of Japanese tubs that are about feet square. They can be used as a tub or shower. Try online.

Have it refinished. Must do professionally but lots cheaper than replacing. Also seals the tub and surround. Kits for DIY at big box - but not very successful.

Japanese tubs are traditionally soaking tubs. In Japan, one washes first before getting into the soaking tub. Modern soaking tubs in the U.S. are extremely expensive.=====I would suggest just replacing the tub surround and tub if need be. They should be good for years to come. I am not sure resurfacing is a more inexpensive way to go. Best of luck. : )

There are smaller tub enclosures available though usually somewhat higher than regular size counter parts. However, if you know a contractor, plumber or handy man they may be able to get you into a local plumbing distributor who has showrooms and is willing to sell at plumber, contractor or handy man prices as well as they have more options unlike places like Home Depot or Lowe's. Personally used family connection to visit and purchase quality products from companies that sell Kohler or American Standard. Visit Yellow Pages/Google online for local companies.

If contractors in your area still give free estimates, line a bunch of them up and pick their brain for free. Then, contract to have them do the tub, shower sink installation only. And / or any electrical work. You can do the rest on your own. That will cut your costs by a chunk. If you do demo yourself you can save even more. All depends on what you are comfortable doing yourself. Hope this gives you a different perspective to consider.

Believe it or not I just saw an ad on TV that solves your problem. It looks like a formed tub that goes right over the old tub. When finished, it looks like a new tub. You can look online and if I see it again I will send you the link.
