Quick and Easy Fireplace Update

We wanted to update this dated fireplace in the property we recently purchased to use as a rental. We wanted something quick and inexpensive that would also set our house apart from other rentals. We have a pallet wall in our own home so we decided to give it another try. This is what we ended up with.
Where we started.
This is what we started with. Certainly not awful but needed something. We also got rid of that dirty carpet. ;)
We bought regular pine boards and did not distress them. I was looking for a slightly "newer look" to the wood. We used stain by Minwax. Starting at the top the board is Expresso, middle board is Dark Walnut and the bottom board is Weathered Oak. I stained them quickly and was not too fussy. I did make sure to stain the sides and ends.
We cut the boards, (we, meaning hubby) so we ended up with 6ft, 4ft and 2ft sections.
Hubby measured and cut the beginning pieces as he went along. The house is nearly 70 years old so the walls were not even. These pieces are 3 and 6 inches wide.
We worked our way up the fireplace. I eyeballed the color as he used the pneumatic nailer to attach the boards to the wall. There is a curve as the wall meets the ceiling. We cut the very top pieces in 1/2 so they would follow the curve of the wall better.
Final Result
Ta Da! This is the final result. We think it added quite a bit to the overall look and feel of the house. It showed beautifully online when we advertised it. Every potential renter mentioned it as they came through the house. Plus as a bonus, ​we rented it quickly! Woot! Woot!
