Best systemic insecticide for house plants?

Can anyone recommend a good systemic insecticide? Each year I treat my house plants with a commercial systemic insecticide before bringing them in. Problem: it has an ugly smell for about a week. I was just wondering if all you great garden people out there know of something different I could do or recommend another product. Thank you for your responses..

Have you tried Safer Insect Killing Soap? It is organic and uses "the power of potassium salts of fatty acids (insecticidal soap). The potassium salts weaken the insect's waxy protective outer shell."

Thank you for your response; however, what I'm looking for is a systemic product. Therefore, I only treat once. When plants are left outside not only do they get leaf bugs but there are bugs that will be in the dirt. One year I brought them in & when I transplanted to larger pots in the spring I found I had winteed over other critters that like living in dirt. I then found out going forward I need to treat systemicly. With systemic products the plant will absorb the product & when the insects eat either the leaves or roots they will be distroyed. Wish there was enough in life for the plants, insects, & me....

Go to Jerry Bakers site, he is the plant wizard.... I think I remember him saying something about peroxide, and dish soap, but I cannot remember... check with his site, he has great ideas on feeding and treating....

I don't use systemic insecticides, but I suggest you try these steps from Clemson University: http://www.clemson.edu/extension/hgic/plants/indoor/care/hgic1454.html

Thank all of your for the responses. @Douglas that is a wonderful site. Found new info on it, even though I've been doing this for a # of years. @Joanne D, will check Jerry Baker out; forgot about him & his expertise knowledge.

I just used Bayers systemic crystals from Lowes on my African violet collection --because they can't be sprayed and it got rid of little flys almost like fruit flys that were buzzing around them---the plants are doing well and no more little bugs---think the container says it was for roses and also has fertilizer in it---cost $10 will alst me my lifetime but the bugs are gone on my sunporch

@Ann W, was that the one you also use on roses? Is it the 3 in 1 or the 2 in 1? I'm having a problem with finding the 3 in 1 in my area. I think it gets sold out before I have a chance to get any. OR is there on specifically for house plants. Thank you for your suggestion..

Insecticidal soap is all that I use - one part dish soap (not detergent) to 20 parts water. Stand the pots in the bath tub and spray top and undersides of leaves. Leave 20 mins and rinse off.

yes it is 2 in one I only wanted it for the African violets live in a condo now so have reduced my house plants and have no roses but I experimented with this stuff and it worked great no more bugs and the violets didn't die yet haha
