Polyacrylic application

I am finishing a long time coming project where I applied a cardstock image to the top of a end table. It is on there good with some high grade medium gloss gel but I wouldn't set anything wet or hot on it. Can I or should I apply some polyacrylic over it since I am doing it to the painted surface? Or is there something else besides glass to give a protectant to the top?

Glass would be more durable but may tend to get fine scratches in time. I'm not sure what your "medium gloss gel" is. I have also used many version of oil and water based poly and well as spray lacquer. My all time fav is oil based wiping poly.

Have you looked into shellac? I have seen it used over cafe tables seems very durable.

@Kari Lavecchia Shellac is dissolved in Alcohol and it can be damaged easily by spilled drinks. Oil based poly is much better in terms of moisture resistance.
