6 Tips for Abundant Edible Container Gardens

Many people give up or don't attempt to grow food in containers thinking it's all in the 'too hard' basket, but I've found with a few basic principles, it's amazing just how many edibles you can grow in a small space. These are a few tips that help me have a continuous bounty of healthy, nutrient-dense produce all year. The tips include watering; plant nutrition/soil food; select plants carefully; consider spacing; sufficient sunlight and planting seasonal vegetables.
This is a basket harvested from my summer garden.
Your potting mix or growing media should retain moisture for healthy plants. I use coir peat (coconut fibre) which is a low cost sustainable resource.
Selecting varieties that don't have to be harvested all at once like cut-&-come-again lettuces maximizes space & helps shade adjoining plants, reducing moisture loss and protecting them from wilting.

That is a beautiful bowl of lettuce!
    • @Douglas Hunt Thanks so much. I have lots of these growing in repurposed bowls and baskets so there's a continual supply of salad ingredients. I plant them up close and personal (about 8 or 9/bowl). They have ornamental value too by mixing up the leaf textures and colours.
