New porch floor???

Question

I am considering using Ipe flooring (Brazilian hardwood) on the floor of my new porch. I understand that it should/would/could weather to a beautiful gray. Does anyone have any experience with that wood? I would also like to use it on the railings, together with aluminium pieces. No, or as little as possible, maintenance for me. Any suggestions or helpful hints. Thanks! :-)

I've done many decks with Ipe...the deck on my own home is over 15 years old and still looks new. I have been using a penetrating oil stain on it as I like the darker 'wood' color. I have also built a number of furniture projects with Ipe. Thank you for the suggestions but this doesn't answer my question because I would like to know some more personal experiences on how it ages without any maintenance as a covered porch floor.

The more exposed areas will weather faster, to get to a uniform grey color it will take a few years. Being covered you can easily maintain the wood's brown tone. I use Penofin deck oil on mine, and with yours being covered you should be able to get 3-4 years between applications. I can oil my 650 sq feet of deck in about 5-6 hours, I get about 18 months between application (spring one year...fall the next)

depending on how big your space is 4-5 hours of 'work' every three or four years seem very easy for 'low maintenance'
