Change entry Chandelier

I have an ultra modern chandelier in my entry way. It is brass with 5 rows of glass strips hanging off of little hooks. I would like to make it more homey and less flashy. Any ideas?

  • Without a picture it is hard to tell, however, with that said~spray paint it black or hammered black or rubbed bronze. If it doesn't turn out you just spray paint over it. LOL

    • @Donna Have one close up of the strips too. I think I have an idea but first I need to see what they look like. I have converted light fixtures and have done doing so. I will watch for it later.

As long as you are not using halogen bulbs (sorry, they are so hot they are fire hazard IMO), you could tone down the flash and add your own touch by covering glass strips with cloth that matches your decor. The good news: you just need remnants and these are dirt-cheap at most fabric stores, so you'll have a lot of choose of quality materials at a low cost and surely find something that could add a country cottage feel to it. DO NOT USE SPRAY PAINT: it's messy and you could end up with a big hot mess mess. And, many paints contain chemicals that could damage brass finish. We found out the hard way when we were slowing replacing all fixtures from previous homeowner with bad case of Disco Fever. With fabric, select material that as thin as possible (look at curtain materials rather than upholstery fabric). Use craft glue, take your time, and you easily change it down the road or even seasonally if you want. Let the brass be: most brass lights are really just brass-coated and also have clear coating. Once this is damaged, fixture rusts easily and looks shoddy: not "shabby cheap" but damaged/old and badly maintained.

Here is the best picture that I have right now. My camera battery died of all times.

Looking for a picture. I got some very inexpensive little lampshades to go over the bulbs after you remove the glass, I also suggest painting it with a nice patina like a bronze or a black. However you would be surprised that someone might really love to have your fixture (70s are in with young people) and maybe get enough to get something you like or can repurposed for your tastes.

@Donna, what type of device are you using? Maybe that's part of the problem.

@Donna, sorry I missed that you finally got the photos loaded. It's a beautiful chandelier. Can you remove the crystals and then add a large drum shade to dress it down a bit?

Not a bad idea. Thanks Becky
