I am new to DIY projects...And I'm in the hunt for a dresser (or two) that I can fix up and paint in an espresso (dark brown).... any suggestions where to find some? Yard/Garage sales, auctions? I live in Long Island (Nassau County) NY.

You can find them through Craigslist, used furniture stores, flea markets, antique stores, and even curbside (if you're lucky enough)
  • with all the other suggestions, don't forget the Habit For Humanity stores and tag sales.

I would try local yard sales, look on Facebook yard sale sites, estate sales, local thrift stores.

At The Curb - Garbage night in most suburban neighborhoods is a good place to find 'free' furniture. Garage Sales, Freecycle.com, and Flea Markets are also good places to find dressers. Best of luck on your DIY project.

Sign up for local auctions, check out GoodWill and Salvation Army. I like the curb thing too. Flea markets, take cash and negotiate, take a friend with you to flea market to keep you in check! They can become addictive, also take a vehicle to take your prize home with you. When you get to the paint part - chalk paint is great. Make your own! cheaper than off the shelf. Google recipe, basic ingredients, plaster of Paris, can get at any home store. Don't forget your friends, ask and you shall receive. Maybe you have a friend that wants to refresh a room and get rid of what they have or clean her garage. Good luck

Join your local Freecycle Yahoo group. You'll be amazed at the things people give away in order to keep them out of the landfill and to avoid having to haul it to their local thrift store

Are you on NextDoor? It is a social media website for your neighborhood. You can post things to sell or giveaway for free. It's also a great way to communicate with your neighbors about crime in your area, or just general news. Check it out and see if your neighborhood is on there. www.nextdoor.com

I meant to add that you can post a request for items and many times people have stuff they don't need anymore and will give it to you. It's a very neighborly website and I absolutely love it. I also second the recommendations for Goodwill. I find wonderful things there all the time.

I always heard about and just located in my city Habitat for Humanity Restore. It's a reuse and recycle center that consumers and builders go to for new and gently used building supplies, tools, furniture, appliances and much more. We haven't gone to one yet, but my husband and i are planning on making it a Date Day! I only wish we knew about it when we were doing our home addition.

I have to admit though, I'm the biggest sucker for freebies on garbage day. I'm always dragging something home for free. It really is amazing what people throw out.
