I want to make a sewing table from an old door, w/storage underneath

I have the old door that my mom used for her sewing table, but the filing cabinets that she used, I don't have. I found some open shelving units at Wal Mart, but I'm afraid that the sewing table might be too high once I get it set up with my sewing machine. (I need to be able to touch the floor - to use the foot pedal for my machine!) Any ideas or suggestions would be great!!

  • I would check out thrift stores and garage sales for filing cabinets to put back under. You can spray paint the filing cabinets to match or paint some fun bold colors for your sewing room. You need to find something that will be your height for sewing so you are comfortable while sewing. I would also check out odds and ends tables, night stands and such that are the right height for you to sew at. good luck!

You could put the foot pedal on a raised box and leave it. The height of table sounds great for cutting patterns or crafting.

You might look into kitchen cabinets also ..both the base cabinets and wall cabinets can sit on the floor. The wall cabinets are small enough that you could put 2 back to back on each end. If it's too high for the foot pedal , use a piece of 1/2 plywood and 2x4 or 6 lumber to build a platform between the cabinets.

You can even try cutting down the open shelve units you bought at walmart, if possible. Or place the foot pedal on a book, for extra height.

Sometimes you can find a sewing machine cabinet at the resale shops or goodwill store without the sewing machine. You just have to keep checking each time you see one.

I ran a sewing center all my life so here's some free advice . I'm around 5'3 and a comfortable sewing table height would be about 28" . You want to sew down not reach up . Get a good adjustable office chair to sit on . I sit for hours at a time at my sewing machine and sold tables and cabinets . If you have a dealer near you go ck out their tables and measure them . I hope that was helpful .
