What is this??

I found this item with some of my Aunt's old things and I have no idea what it is. Can someone please shed some light on what this is? It is all real wood. There are no markings on it. My Aunt always loved picking up antique and vintage things so I think it is probably pretty old. I have had no luck finding anything like it online.

My first inclination would be to put on or pull off my boots using this. Would make sense as a fireside piece for that purpose.

I believe Sue is correct. I saw one once in a house we toured on vacation. I do like William's idea, though. It would make sense to use it for that.
