If you're handy you could build a three sided box that sits on the floor and hides it and could be a shelf for books and plants. It could be made out of a an old drawer if you can find one with the proper dimensions. Google repurposing old drawers for some ideas. Or maybe find a book case that is proportionate and slide it in front with the back facing out and reface the back with something interesting like tin tiles. A lot depends on the decor you already have in the room.

A sofa table with a decorative vignette on top to draw the eye away from the unit....Add a skirt if necessary when both units are not in use.

Take the back panel off a base cabinet and place it in front of the unit when not in use. The bonus is you can store other things in the cabinet too.
