Repurposing an old hutch

I have a very heavy hutch that I've been storing in the garage since I downsized. Any ideas how I can repurpose?

If you've got wall pace for it, you can use French cleats to hang it on the wall. do you have any special collection(s) you might want to display?

Can the unit be taken apart?

I'm using the base. But don't have use for the mirrored hutch. The hutch doors have heavy leaded etched glass that can be removed.

Daughter has a hutch she just rests on the floor for her china. You could use it as a bookcase. Or sell it.

It could make a beautiful liquor cabinet/wine rack.

Could you use the flat front as a headboard? The curved sides might not work, but if you took the front off??

If you have the space in your bathroom, it would make a great addition. Plenty of attractive storage and the mirror would show of your everyday items if you use pretty glassware concealing the mundane contents.

You could use it as a curio cabinet. If so, if possible , it might look better to take the flourishes, high curved arches, off the top. That way you could then use the top for lamp, etc. If the top isn't finished, get a nice piece of wood stained the same, to complete.

Its beautiful... I'd put legs on it and use it as a curio...

I agree. It's fabulous. Try to find a cabinetmaker to make a simple base that could be dressed up a bit with wood-carved appliquΓ©s. The glass front with mirror back would brighten and dazzle any space. I would guess its no more than 18" deep. Have a hallway ? Wish it were mine. Extraordinary piece

YES IT IS SO PRETTY WOULD IT SET ON TOP OF THAT DRESSER BEHIND IT YOU CAN REMOVE TO MAKE IT SHORTER. BE REALLY NICE TO STORE SWEATERS AND FINE CLOTHING PIECES IN. ORFIX FOR YOUR COLLECTIONS IN

That's the hutch base. I think I'm taking your advice and putting it back on the base. I retired to Florida and felt it too bulky for my new decor.

Carmen, it really is too beautiful to modify too much. If it's too bulky for your dΓ©cor or wall area, do consider what Jcraw said, to find a craftsman to build matching legs so as not to be too high and as Sonya said, if the top scroll can come off with out damage to give a simpler look but still very beautiful.

It is beautiful. I was trying to figure out if the table and chairs pictured are part of your dining room now. If so stain or paint the chairs and table to match the hutch or if you must -chalk paint the hutch and chairs (and base of table). It sure is pretty like it is though. Hope you find an answer. Let us know how it turns out. Best of luck to you.

If you do have legs made for the top then you could use the base as a TV stand ( take off middle cabnets -wood fill holes and paint) or an island ( add a butter block to the top) or as a sideboard ( paint and add a lamp at either end and hang the mirror over it.

Thank you all for your great suggestions! I decided to put it back on the base and take off the crown to make it appear more modern and less stuffy! πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌ

If you don't have an office or homework area for the kids. and you can put it back on base. use as room divider to make small office space., if you have a large den or room. just and idea.
