multiply when it's time to do preserves. I've heard there is a vinegar to use, but I'm not sure how.

@Marlyn Pain just put apple cider vinegar in a small container.(plate, lid, bowl) What ever you have room for. And the pesky little guys will kill themselves to drink it. You will wake up in the morn and they will be gone!

@S I learned this when I had vinegar in an o/v cruet set. It had a pour spout on it and when I went to use it I was amazed to find the bottom covered in fruit flies ! Thank goodness I saw them before using it.

You can also put the vinegar, water, soap mixture in the bottom of a bottle with a funnel on top. The flies fly in and are unable to fly back out.
  • I use the apple cider vinegar with drop or two of dawn, funnel from paper in the jar works great, I have a table in my breakfast nook I put tomaotes on & this is keeping them gone every 3or 4 days I have had to changed it out because there where so many in it.

vacuum them up (empty bag outdoors) then wipe everything thoroughly with Lysol wipes. I've heard spray Lysol helps immensely too. I used to put out the vinegar bowl but then realized I was putting out an invitation as they like it. Eliminate warm, wet and damp wherever possible. They supposedly welcome new fruit fly life every six hours which is why you think yourself victorious but begin the battle again.

Peppermint candies in your flower pots is where they hatch , Also when at the Grocery store shake the fruit like grapes and other things so you don't bring them home with you! Peppermint oils can also work!

Just used the cider vinegar today cause I had so many in the kitchen. There were probably 10 or more. They are all floating in the vinegar! That's the easy way to get rid of them. Just put it in a lid & they thought they were out for a free meal! LOL!!!

Fill a microwave-safe bowl with apple cider vinegar and a few drops of dish soap. Microwave the bowl so the mixture becomes even more aromatic. Leave the bowl out uncovered as fruit fly bait. The soap will reduce the surface tension, causing any fruit fly that lands on the surface to drown. Now, if what you have might be drain flies...if that is what you have try this: Boil some water on the stove and pour down your drain several times a day for about a week or Mix 1/2 cup salt, 1/2 cup baking soda and 1 cup of vinegar and then pour the mixture down the drain, leaving it overnight. In the morning, pour boiling hot water down the drain.

If a drain fly infestation lasts longer than 20 days despite different approaches to get rid of them, then it’s time to call a professional exterminator.
