Can I make a functional desk with 36"?

There is a 36" area in the laundry room that I would like to use for a desk for myself. I will use it daily for study, no computer; plenty of room on the wall for shelves, etc.
The potential desk would be to this side of the W/D and replace the tall storage that is there now.

I am thinking that if yo were to put shelves from ceiling down, that the last shelf could be used as desk and then you still have space for storage above, Make sure you have more light for reading, ect. than what the picture shows. Good luck. Post what you do.

You don't need a huge desk just for study. Remember those elementary school desks? They couldn't have been much more than 18x24. Don't forget a reading lamp. If you do put in the shelves attach a clip on style to the shelf just above your desk. If you use a folding card table it can double for folding clothes too.

I agree with the other comments. I would make the shelves above a little less deep than the desk shelf. A folding desk shelf is ideal. 3 feet is more than enough room.

I've been saving pictures because my husband would be helping me and he needs to see what I want. Shelves are exactly what I want, but in different widths, layout designs. Also, the oak cabinets above the W/D are going to be replaced (preferably with open shelves) so I can tie together the two areas that are separated by a 6" support that is between the white cabinet and the dryer (hidden).

I did think a repurposed hutch would work nicely. We reviewed the area again yesterday and may go a different direction. I'll let you all know how it goes. I cannot say how much I appreciate you all!

perhaps consider making the outside corner of the desk near that arched opening rounded off a bit, since a sharp corner could get run into by people moving through the room and there's no one at the desk.

I bought a collapable sewing table with drawers on the side! Around $99.00!

You won't be needing a huge amount of space, but, I would utilize every inch of the 36 inches with a flat space. Perhaps something along the lines of a pretty wide sofa table. Open underneath where you could use Rubbermaid storage drawer units for 'things' Open shelving with baskets up top for keeping supplies, mail, papers, markers, whatever contained and out of sight, a comfortable chair maybe on casters so you can scoot where ever you need to go. By all means a lamp maybe one that clamps to the underside of a top shelf. Good luck!
