I've never had etched glass doors, but I always use Dawn (original) dish soap and it removes all old soap scum clinging onto the glass and leaves it clean and clear.
Vinegar and Dawn dish washing liquid. Lemon Pledge, spray it on, let it sit, scrub with a sponge, rinse. Wet about three or four dryer sheets and scrub.
Use straight vinegar and a few squirts of Dawn. Enough to soak a cloth or sponge. No water. You want the vinegar to cut through the grime and the Dawn keeps it suspended on the glass. Scrub and the rinse.
I use a product that I just recently discovered... Awesome,, is the name... I can only get it at the local Dollar stores. It should be called amazing.. but it is "Awesome"
I use plain white vinegar in a cheap spray bottle - spray the whole area then scrub with a soft bristled brush (the one from a dustpan and brush set). Rinse with hot water and repeat if necessary. Methylated spirits is good for this also - use the same method as vinegar. Once the glass is dry, a coat of car polish will help keep them clean.
Dryer fabric softener sheets! New or used! Scented or not! You'll be amazed that you just rub onto wet glass, rinse with clear water and squeegee dry! I usually do it with the shower running after I've finished my bath so the rinsing part is super easy!
I am OCD about having a clean bathroom :) and have tried so many products over the years, but this is my best one. Take an empty spray bottle, add 2 squirts (yes only 2) of Dawn Dishsoap - 3 tablesoons of white vinegar - and then water. Spray your doors and wait about 2 or 3 minutes - wipe (no need to rinse, the dishsoap will not build up, but will leave a nice barrier that prevents build-up). I have found that using a micro-soft cloth works best. Try this on your chrome fixtures too, you will be amazed at how shiny they will become.
Use the original Avon Skin So Soft. Spray it on, wait 15 minutes and then use a scouring pad. It cleans off all the hard water marks and grime and leaves the glass clear. Be sure to rinse the shower floor well because this will make it slippery. No harsh fumes. Smells fresh and clean.
Don't use chemicals or even vinegar and dish soap. I have the decoratively etched shower doors and Mr. Clean Magic Eraser work's fantastically by itself. In case you're not acquainted with it, these white "sponges" take soap scum off of glass as well as they takes marks off of walls. So that you're aware, they naturally wear down with each project.
I have clear glass doors. I spray them, and the shower enclosure, with a diluted solution of Finish Jet Dry, then lightly rinse everything and squeegee the doors. They have stayed completely free of soap scum.
I used a product called Driven, heavy duty glass cleaner. You put it on glass then use a steel wool pad. It has worked great for my windows. Then use there window wax. It's sold on line.
Use window cleaner, then wipe with a cloth that has lemon oil on it. You don't want the shower to look greasy, so just a drop or two of oil works. This keeps deposits from you shower doors, and make them easier to clean next time.
I "etched" drinking glasses that I thought I would have to throw away but tried Bar Keeper's Friend with a used, softened green scrubby pad and they were like new and still are two years later. First try it on a small area and rinse before doing the whole thing.There is now a liquid version.
We bought a home that the etched glassed shower doors were horrible in - and I usually use vinegar but it could not clean it all. Then I tried Lysol toilet bowl cleaner. They came out PERFECT!.. after that because we had hard water once a month I sprayed them with a solution of 1 part toilet bowl cleaner to 10 parts water - let sit for about 2 minutes and rinsed!
Awesome ,a spray in a 32 oz bottle, we buy for one dollar. The best cleaner we have ever used. After showering and drying yourself, wipe the complete shower and it will always shine.
After you get them clean, do not use bar soap in the shower. Our cleaning lady gave this tip to us. Use only shower gel. The bar soap leave a waxy soap scum
Whichever liquid formula you use, scrub with either a magic eraser or bunch of used wadded-up dryer sheets. Some elbow grease required. The tip on not using bar soap is a good one. If you don't want to use a squegee, try a good quality microfiber cloth on the doors after each use. I wipe down my entire shower every day, but my husband wipes his down only once a week (when he has more time). Even the once a week wipe down reduces the frequency of cleaning.
Once you do get the doors clean, put a tension shower rod inside with a shower curtain of your choice. I use a white cloth one...easy to wash. Just slide it to cover the doors while you shower...slide it back out of the way when you are through. NO MORE GROSS DOORS TO CLEAN!!!
After you clean them use Rain-X ab. once a month. Available on Amazon and in automotive stores. I've used it for years and it definitely cuts down on the soap residue left on doors and tiles. I know this is not the answer you are looking for but it may help to keep you from scrubbing in the future.
I have used Zap and also Zep they both work great but really any good cleaner even good old Vinegar and peroxide or ,baking soda, lemon juice and some good old elbow grease now once you get them nice and clean keep them that way with a solution of vinegar and peroxide in a spray bottle and spritz after each shower and DRY your doors after each use!! Also a solution of alcohol or TSP and scrapper also does the trick and will give you a clean door.
I used this and it works great...cut a lemon in half and rub it all over the door..then a cloth with Windex...that is all we use anymore is a nice juicy lemon cut in half..
CLR or Amish cleaner. You have to let them sit on it for a while and maybe use a plastic scrubber. We have really hard water, and both work. When you're done, put a coat of car wax on it. It will help keep the soap scrum off.
50/50 Blue Dawn and Hot Vinegar. Get a spray bottle, fill halfway with blue dawn dishwashing soap, heat up the vinegar in the microwave, pour into spray bottle with blue dawn. Mix well, spray on shower/tub surface. You can leave on for 30 minutes or all day. Rinse well. Easier to do if you have a hand held shower head. I also use a rag just to help the soap rinse off. Warming up the vinegar is the trick.
The stuff I SWEAR by because it cleaned a horrible brown-stained fiberglass tub when we moved into this house is Showers N Stuff by Don Aslett. I buy the gallon bottle and split it into spray bottles. It's absolutely amazing stuff.
I wondered about some of his products. I bought the microfiber mop set and love it. I spray white vinegar on my shower doors to clean them. I spray and go do something and spray it again, repeat a few times and use a sponge with a scrubbie on it. It works but I'm going to try the turtle wax. I clean houses for work.
I would use lime a way a few times but it turns chrome black if you don't rinse it well. Then dry it well....... when dry, use lemon oil or we have SAVE-WAY Stainless Appliance spray oil. ( fancy lemon oil) Baby oil might work... then do it every time. I have seen it remove scale from tile... make sure you dry it first and don't get it on the grout. Grout that can not breath will mold. This works like syrup melts peanut butter..... it just works,,, the oil spray is at Publix and Walmart. It is a blue and white aerosol can. just wipe on... you don't have to wipe off.
Mix vinegar, baking soda and dawn dishwashing soap. Use a scrub brush to get into the etched surface. When it's good and clean coat it with a liquid floor wax.
Spray the inside with Dow Bathroom Cleaner from top to bottom. Let it turn clear, then use a scrub brush till clean. I do this every few weeks when I do the shower. It is safe to use on the walls of a shower, the sink and the commode.
I think they're talking about the design element on the doors when they say "etched". Magic eraser is the best but also wet down some paper towels with vinegar and place them on the door, keep wet by spraying every now and then with vinegar and let sit for an hour or until soap scum is soft and removable.
I clean my shower doors and walls with turtle car wax. Wax the door and let it dry, then buff with clean rag or old towel. Also helps keep clean for a month, the water runs off while showering.
RainEx window cleaner system. Works great, much like the Turtle Wax. Then, after glass is clean and shiny use a squeegee after each shower. P. S. Use liquid bath soap, bath gel, or inexpensive shampoo to shower with to limit soap scum on the glass and tiles.
The easiest cleaner for your shower doors is your shampoo. Just pour a bit on a washcloth, rub it over the door and rinse. If you have quite a bit of build up then pour the shampoo on a nylon scouring pad, rub in a circular motion, then rinse.
Mix equal portions Dawn dish soap & white vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray on, wait about 10 minutes, then rinse off. Occasionally you may have to scrub after the ten minutes but usually you won't have to. If you have hard water stain - cut a lemon in half, dip in baking sofa, and scrub. Allow this to sit 10 - 15 minutes & rinse. After you get it clean mix 1/2 cup alcohol, 1/2 cup peroxide, 1 tablespoon Jet Dry, 1 teaspoon Dawn dish soap, in a 32 ounce spray bottle and top off with water. Spray on shower walls, tub sides and floor of tub or shower. Use this after each time you clean your tub or shower and after each shower. I live in a rental with extremely hard water. The tub was so bad that it looked orange. It is white now!
Use a used dry dryer sheet and rub glass well and you will have no more scum. I have used this method for a number of years and swear by it. Try it out - you have nothing to lose and it doesn't cost you anything just a little elbow grease..
Use hot water to wet shower doors then rub doors with Bryllcream shaving lotion.I know sounds weird but the truth is it works! And cheap a can of brycream about $1.30
Lemon oil will clean the glass like new and bead excess water and soap scum off. Once every few weeks. No scrubbing. Just lemon oil from furniture polish aisle in store and a wash cloth or rag.
I used lime Away, the spray and let it sit for a while and rinse off. Let the door dry and use Future or any other acrylic floor wax with a throw out rag. Do both sides and put a reminder in yor calendar to do it again if cloudy every 3 months. It will wear off evebtually, but till then it will gleam. Old military wife trick.
Good luck. I have the same problem at this house I just bought. Lady who owned it told me she had tired everything . I just knew there had to be something to remove the calicum /hardwater deposits. I've used everything and nothing so far has worked. I used 2 products I ended up getting free because they just know they would work. Nope still there. I think once the calcium is on the glass for ever. I'm thinking about just etching the whole thing so it all looks alike myself.
Really, SnoBowl toilet bowl cleaner works. I, too have VERY HARD WATER & use this, it works so well, but has to be done with good ventilation & a couple breaks away from the odor. I just squirt it on, sponge it around (with gloves), then rinse with my flexible shower hose - then treat with rain-x to help repel longer.
I've had the same problem and when I asked my contractor what would work he said to just get new doors! I have also thought of etching it so please post if you try it.
It will take some "elbow grease" but the best way we have found is to use car wax to clean and treat the residue. It should clear away all of it. Then add another fresh coat and polish it to help protect the newly cleaned door.
I use a mixture of vinegar, 'Dawn' dish detergent, and water. I use Palmolive, but the recipe is all over the internet with Dawn. Spray from the top and let it soak and over a bit of time it will disappear. I keep a bottle in the shower for a few spritzes after every shower and there is no buildup. (and the vinegar leaves a fresh and not a humid smell when you leave the bathroom)!

A person should use a squeegee from day one after every shower, it will take you 10 seconds maximum. My showers still looks like when we installed it. Should you have a bit of lame on the glass, I use a 'body-glove' which I only use for cleaning and a bit of shower gel, it works like magic!
exactly.... i squeegie my little heart out but it's pointless when no one else will. I have beautiful glass showers and alot of minerals from great well water and I can never get them to look good.
