How can I redo a root cellar under the porch for extra storage

Root cellar under the front porch and can be very damp and smelly..would like to make over for more suitable storage space. I have heard several opinions..wish i could wall it up, however there are pipes that run and may need to get access to? any ideas?

I painted my walls with DRYLOCK and then I rotate on a regular basis a item that absorbs water or if you have an outlet you could use a dehumidifier.

If you want to create 'walls' and shelving, use cedar fence boards (rough cut are probably cheaper). The cedar absorbs moisture without rotting as quickly as other boards, and the scent would certainly improve (as well as discourage critters & insects).

i saw one on here and they closed around the porch with lattice and they made a trap door like on old westerns on their front porch put a rug over it noone knew it was there Some days u could open it for extra air even use a fan and mama always used lime to draw damp out of the ground. good luck dhall
