DIY COMPOST BIN

Marion Tinney
by Marion Tinney
This project was inspired by others I had seen on the web. I screwed together three wooden pallets at the corners. Then I wrapped all three sides with deer netting stapled on. Next, I continued to wrap the deer netting to form a gate that attaches to cup hooks on the side.

Looks good. Usually the recommendation is to have three of these bays in a row. I think that is so that you have the raw stuff, the stuff that is getting there but not quite ready to use on the garden yet, then the good stuff, that you can dip into when you need to for spreading on the garden where needed. The reason is that you should not put compost on your garden beds that is not fully broken down. If you can see any food scraps left in it and it does not look like a nice chocolate dark soil with no odour - then it is not ready to go on the garden. If you use compost before it is fully ready, it can actually be to the detriment of the garden and add moulds and bacteria that you don't want on your garden beds!

Very nice job. We have 3 compost bins made out of recycled pallets that were "clean". It's great to have access to your own compost. Carole, you are correct. However, we use compost "starter" as well as microbial cultures to help keep our bins "cooking". May I suggest you surf for info on both E-M1, Bokashi juice and Azomite. All organic and work like a charm.
