I have seen these in Nova Scotia, some were used as door stops (filled with sand). I have looked for one of these, mostly painted on old moonshine jugs that were once used to store apple cider. Some were pottery and others clear glass with the landscape painted on the jar in oils. GREAT FIND!

My mother is a long time(40+ years) professional crafter and she had a friend that painted jars and other things just like that...I am pretty sure she painted your jar. Her name was Betty Jane Myers. She passed away about 15 years ago. Her friends collect her paintings and they are gaining in popularity.

@Karen McLendon It has the name Joy on the very bottom of the painting :)

Lovely! Score. My great grama painted china and would practice on doorstops too. (BTW more utility in the days before central heat & air)

It IS pretty! You can get that look by using acrylic and a sponge - look at the pores on the sponge to make sure it is what you want. After painting, you'll need a sealer to make sure the paint won't come off.

.It is possible to use oil paints on glass. I have painted on different kinds of things. Is the painting on the inside of the jar? Not real easy to do.
    • LInda LInda on Oct 19, 2013
@Marilyn V It's on the outside and it goes all the way around the jar with unbelievable detail..I will treasure this ! I would love to find out who this "Joy" is I have googled and googled but nothing :)

It is beautiful! Probably someone that did lots of these as a hobby & the heirs (aka children if she/he had them) either optioned to sell the stuff or just donate it to good will sad... but happy that you found it & will give it new life &* appreciate it appropriately!!

Yes I do. In 200 & 2001 I belonged to a book club and one of the art projects was painting on quart jars. Look at amazon or any online book sales for craft books it was dedicated just to that project.
