How to root this fern.

What is the best way to root this? You plant thieves inspired me to lift this from a public place. It is what I call asparagus fern.

I'm going to assume you asked permission before taking the cutting, but there is little chance of propagating asparagus fern, Asparagus densiflorus (which actually is not a fern at all but a member of the lily family), by this means. The University of Missouri Extension Service lists division as the only means of propagation. Furthermore, you should exercise caution in planting. I don't know about Texas, but in Florida this plant is a Category I invasive and you can shred your hands to pieces trying to get rid of it, which will mostly be an exercise in frustration. http://extension.missouri.edu/p/G6560

won't "root" in water it will "rot" instead. the entire ball for this plant needs to be placed in soil. next time, ask permission before you "lift" so often the proper authorities will say yes especially when its an annual that is going to be disposed of it come clean up time in the Fall. this plant is rather inexpensive to purchase in the Spring. keep your gardening eyes open in 2014.

At times of the year you will see red berries...let them dry and plant, otherwise like D.Hunt said....divide the root and replant.

just buy one. Keep it in a pot they are invasive planted outside.

They have pods for roots...need to split and divide if you want to propogate..Sorry

Have whom ever owns this plant, put a pot of starter soil next to the big fern . Take a branch and lay it in the pot and put a rock or yard staple on it and pin it down on the soil. Keep it moist but not wet! Good luck ! I do this with many plants and it works with most!

We purchased a home in Panama City Beach, FL and they were all over the yard. I HATED them! I've never liked anything that is invasive and uncontrollable. I've had asparagus fern before in Louisiana in a pot with other things and thought it was pretty. Well...after the home in FL, I decided I'll never have them again. The green seed pods fall off all over underneath the plants and the fern is prickly on your skin when you brush up against them. I'd say that even if you have them in a pot to be careful when you sweep the patio or you'll have them coming up all over the place.

they may be invasive in florida but in the area of texas she is in it is not a issue but my suggestion would be to go back to the person you got this from and ask if they are going to separate their plant and if so could you have a piece. also since you are near dallas they are not consistently hardy there so I would suggest growing in a pot and bringing in for the winter

You might try a rooting powder/compound. It is a hormone, so make sure to wash your hands after using it. You dampen the plant stem, dip the stem in the rooting powder and stick it in a hole you have already poked in the soil for it (you want to leave as much of the rooting compound on the stem as possible). Firm the soil around the cutting's stem and water. Most plants will root with this stuff, it's pretty amazing.

And, that fern IS really invasive in Florida. Many nurseries do not carry it for that very reason.

It doesn't matter how or where you got it, there is a question that needs an answer! I haven't had any luck trying it in water. I do believe you can get the seeds from someone's plant and try it that way! Good luck! If you want to give me your address I can send you some!
