a member of the "Carrion Cactus" clan because it smells like rotting meat although it is a succulent and not a cactus. Carrion plant, Starfish flower, Starfish cactus are just a couple of the common names. In the same family as milkweeds

In East Texas it's called Texas Star Cactus even though it's a succulent. Years ago, I had one that grew about 3 feet down from the hanging basket it was in. It actually pulled itself out of the dirt. The flowers do stink, but I don't find that's a problem, and I do love the plant.

@Hilliriah Jacobs I think the smaller one is called Star of Bethlehem. I have both of these and they are so easy to grow!

I have a couple of these succulents and they have large beautiful blooms. Mine are outdoors, so I've never noticed any offensive odor. They do attract an occasional fly, nothing outrageous, but this is how they pollenate.

I've always called it "star cactus" and yes, it smells like a dead rotting frog! But it's so unique and beautiful at the same time.
