  I am a spinner and have a similar one that I use when I take my spinning wheel to guild meetings or social gatherings. The back slips out of the groove for ease of transport. There are no arm rests to get in the way when spinning a long draw. The item in this photo could be that although the folks who are saying it is a step stool may be correct as well. It would depend on the height of the 'seat'. My spinning chair is the perfect height for me to sit and spin.

it looks like a step stool, my great uncle made something very similar. The tall handle makes it easier to move around

This has also been used as a Amish milking stool, said to have first been made in the Netherlands.

There have been versions of this type stool used fireside to aide in taking off and on boots. One clue is the 'boot-jack' on the rear foot.

Looks to me like a step stool? Though back legs don't look sturdy enough to hold any weight.... AND the step up may be too high. WILD GUESS.

My mother in law had one very similar. Wasn't a chair but a step. She moved it around by the handle at the top of the back. Hers was only about 15 inches to the "seat". Couldn't tell how high yours is.

It is a Hall Chair. These were used in Victorian times for staff.

We used them as a "boot stool". You move them around by the handle (circle) at the top. Place your booted foot on the stool and lace up!

You put it by the back door in winter time. Sat on it to put your boots on and your winter coat hung on the back. Your scarves looped through the holes.

It is a pouting chair. If you google the image you will see how similar it is. A birthing chair has a much wider seat and a valet chair has places for a man to hang clothes

It looks like one from the Colonial area, those you hang up on the pegs that hang around the room. When not in use, most everything was hung on the "Shaker" pegs.

It most likely is a butler's chair or a men's valet. They were common in the 1800's for the gentlemen's chair in mid century.

No, I don't believe that's a butlers chair or men's valet - to be honest I think I saw that on Antiques Roadshow way back when - sorry I don't remember what they said but I think it was worth something....Good luck!

that is not a butler's chair. A butler's chair or valet has a cross piece on which to hang a suit coat.

  A proper 'milking a cow stool' is a simple 3-legged easily maneuverable 'chair' with no back. It needs to be light so many farmers can quickly move from cow to cow or goat to goat. The milkers must be nimble and alert to avoid being kicked accidentally. The high back on this chair would cause frequent and unnecessary stumbling; thus a safety issue.

It's call a Gentleman's Valet. It's from the 1960's. This piece was placed by the door, and it was used for the man of the house to place his briefcase, tie and other things needed to go to work on his way out.

No to both. From all the responses and being 17” to the seat, I would say it is a boot chair. Can easily be hung on wall, out of the way, when not in use. Still don’t know what the wholes are for. I may have to watch a zillion years of antique road show.
