Time to Plant Amaryllis for Winter Blooms

Do you grow amaryllis bulbs in your house during the winter? To me, there is nothing more welcoming than those big red flowers greeting me in the kitchen on a cold January morning. Now is the time to start them for December blooms.
Your local nursery or grocery store should start stocking boxes of amaryllis bulbs very soon. This is the easiest way to start your bulbs as everything is included in the kit.
Follow the instructions on the box, leaving the top third of the bulb above the soil line. Water it well.
Within a week, you should start seeing some growth. In this picture you can see the main stalk growing.
You can also plant up narcissus bulbs in a glass dish with some pebbles for an interesting display.
Within 6 weeks, you'll have beautiful large blooms that should last about 2 weeks. Here they are grouped with an orchid and some branches from the garden. I use the branches to help support the tall stems.
I'm partial to the "red lion" variety - love the huge red blooms. But amaryllis come in a variety of colours including white, pink and salmon and some lovely variegated varieties
Once the blooms start to fade, I tuck them into a small vase for some final drama.

I started with one and I now have 7..I didn't know that I could grow them in the house in the winter. I guess I better get moving and find a place in the house for them. thanks
    • @Debbie Sigle Wow, you grow them outside in New Jersey? I didn't realize that they would over-winter this far north. You should be able to force them into bloom once they come in the house.
