Hi Folks ! Another painting question

Ann Marie
by Ann Marie
In the continuing quest to transform my little studio apartment from "ugly duckling" to "beautiful swan" -- basically to bring the place up to my live-ability and cleanliness standards, I would like to clean up/refinish/paint the exhaust hood over the stove. The stove was replaced during the previous tenants tenure, so it's in pretty good shape, but the hood is older and rather gross and dirty, not to mention that it's a different color than the stove. Can I paint it with something like Rust-Oleum ? Do I have to remove and/or sand the previous finish off ? Or can I paint right over the current color ? Or should I just try to give it the best cleaning I can and abandon the idea of painting it ?
Thanks in advance !

If you could remove the hood, the job would be easier. You can paint over the existing color as long it is stable. You would have to really clean the hood from all dirt and grease. You can use ammonia and water or TSP and water. Sand lightly to remove any shine and roughen the surface for paint. Use a high temperature primer, then paint with a high temperature appliance paint.

I would run a cost analysis-the last range hood i purchased had a 30$ price tag. go to the home improvement store and total up the costs of what you would need purchase- the hi temp paint/primer the tsp amonia the brushes if needed. don't forget to include the time it would take to do the painting

Usually held up by screws of some sort. Just have to do a little investigation, either from underneath or if a cabinet is over it check inside. Taking down should not be a problem, yet putting up might require 2 people, not because of weight but size. If you are a dyier and choose to keep the original a vinegar water mix should clean it up. If you use steel wool should not have to sand. Good luck.

4 screws, one to each corner, usually. my issue was the previous 50 screw holes. yup 50. wound up cutting a board to fit in the bottom of the cabinet above the stove just to have a secure foundation to screw into.
