I have a fence I would like to install along 45 feet of back property lines. Any simple instructions/materials for digging post holes?

I have to know the type of soil before I answer. Dry, moist, boggy. Is it to keep out critters, deer, humans?
  • Hire someone - you do not want to dig holes for fence posts - it is back breaking work. Depending upon what part of the country you live in, depth does make a difference. Also check with your local municipality - may require a building permit.

We recently replaced our 4 ft with a 6 ft. We hired a professional to dig the holes he would dig as many for $175.00. That was a lot but he brought out the equipment and we had to have the holes marked off in orange or white spray paint before he got there. It took him 1/2 hour to do it and although it was a major expense, it was so much easier to start with the posts. he knew the frost line and dig down below it. Be careful how you mark it though, We then put the 8 ft posts in along with dry cement then leveled and made them straight and then put the water in. We used pretreated wood for the cross rails (you can use 2x4's its cheaper) and then pretreated 6ftx5-1/2' dog eared pickets, one by one. 16 pickets for an 8 ft section. Went up faster then you would think but all the screws are time consuming. Make sure you use the proper screws that come with a special bit in each box. It came out great. If you can not get the machinery in your backyard then you can rent a post hole auger, but it takes two strong men to operate it. Good luck!

If you're a died-in-the-wool do-it-yourselfers, you could check to see if you have a garden center or landscaping business that will rent you a posthole digger. That's what we did. total cost was $15 per hour. We only needed it for 6 hours. If I had it to do over again, though, I would hire someone to do the entire job, including installing the posts.

I just replaced the fence along the back property line with my dads help. I live in FL and just had to dig sand (would not/could not have done through the shale in NY) Even with the sand it was a horrible job. When the rest of the fence has to be replaced, I'm paying a pro!
