Kitchen Sink Plumbing Problem

When pushing down the handle of my faucet, the water does not turn off.
Full story:
Last week my faucet was leaking. The faucet has a valve on the side which sends water to the dishwasher, and it seemed that the valve was loose, so I tightened all the connections with groove pliers. That fixed the leak.
At first everything was fine, but now the faucet handle doesn't work. I can only shut off the water by flipping the valve to dishwasher mode.
Any suggestions?

This is probably not the cheapest route but will be the best in the long run. I would pick up a new single hole faucet, and rework the supply lines below the sink. installing a set of new 1/4 turn ball supply valves for the faucet and a new independent 1/4 turn valve for the dishwasher. I would also rework the drain so the dishwasher output does not have to be directed into the sink.

I would replace the entire faucet and redirect the dishwasher drain underneath the sink as mentioned by KMS. Its not that hard, I've done it twice with and with out a garbage disposal.

I agree, it's time to replace the faucet & while you're at it you might as well re-do the hot water feed to the dishwasher so it's under the sink & re-plumb the drain line into the sink drain underneath as well. Get rid of those ugly hoses. If you use copper or PVC pipe you won't need a separate shut off valve for the dishwasher water supply. It's not as difficult or as expensive as you might think. I'm sure there are tons of online tutorials if you need them.

It looks like the existing tap has certainly earned its' keep and time to retire it with something more dependable..Agree on re-routing the dishwasher feed as well.
