Re-do Countertop on a Dime

I have a 4" x4" chipped white tile countertop in a rental kitchen. Are there any ideas out there for a DYI "on the cheap" but doesn't look like "on the cheap??" Thanks in advance for any and all ideas!

Re-tiling can be very cost effective as well as going with a basic laminate. I have done a number of counter using "large format" granite tiles. You can get a semi-slab look at tile prices.
