Getting silicone adhesive off

Deborah D
by Deborah D
I recently took down my shower doors and have installed a shower curtain instead. I was able to take the sides off but the bottom track seems to have been put on with silicone adhesive and will not just pull off. The tub is fiberglass so I need to be careful as well. I have tried goo gone but it still requires a lot of elbow grease and does not seem to be working out. Some one suggested using a sharp tool to slowly keep cutting till it comes off very slow too. Any suggestions will be helpful or any type of product I can put on without hurting the tub. I am stuck :)

@Deborah D -I used a razor blade on my tub, but it will/can leave scratches.

Try using Acetone. Not regular nail polish remover, but the Acetone you buy in Lowes or HD.

Walmart has big bottles of acetone also......I just got some from there.....
  • I have heard Vodka (so if you have any stashed away I would try this). Soak the area and supposedly it loosens the silicone.

I've softened silicone caulk using my hair dryer and then scraped/cut it off with a box knife. Our shower door bottom track was screwed in and caulked so carefully remove all the caulk.

The best product I have found for removing silicone caulk is a 'green' product I bought at Lowes called Motsenbocker's Lift-Off. This product does not actually dissolve the sealant, but rather breaks the molecular bond, allowing it to be removed in pieces. Do not use this if you have a non-white tub.
