As weird as it sounds, I have been using a little bit of mint flavored Listerine mouthwash. I have a separate tank for rinse water and I mix in just a heaping tablespoon or two. I also add white vinegar to the rinse water to cut any soapy residue in the carpet since any soap left behind in the fibers will act as a dirt magnet and make your carpets dirty again faster. The Listerine not only helps dilute the smell of the white vinegar, but it neutralizes pet odors in the carpet too. Leaves your house smelling "minty fresh!" :)

I hope you don't "shampoo" your carpet more than once a year......and quite frankly, you should follow the manufacturers recommendations and have the carpets professionally cleaned one a year. More than that and you are reducing the life of the carpet. Shaw recommends using hot water extraction, and a home center rental machine does not EXTRACT the same amount of water as a professional machine and thus you degrade the carpet backing, the carpet pad and the sub-floor with the excess moister left behind.
